But Staples is back in buying mode.Witness the chase taking place for Essendant Inc., the Illinois-based office supplier. Staples director Stefan Kaluzny increased the pressure this week on Essendant CEO Richard Phillips to do a deal. Phillips already has a competing offer on the table, to merge with Genuine Parts Co.’s S.P. Richards business.Kaluzny wants Phillips to shove that offer aside. In his Aug. 13 letter to Phillips, Kaluzny pointed to Essendant’s ascendant stock price: It’s trading at nearly $15 a share, up from below $10 a share in April. Kaluzny said the stock is so hot because Staples began investing in Essendant in May, soon after the Genuine Parts merger announcement. Gary Holmes has had a 20-year love affair with the old Milwaukee Road Depot. The once abandoned train terminal has been a labor of love for Holmes, president and chief executive of development company CSM Corp., which has poured millions into renovations of the complex over the last two decades. The former train hub is in the middle of a long-awaited final phase of its transformation as a hospitality and event center, scheduled to be finished by early next year. “I had a fascination with old buildings and loved old buildings,” Holmes said. “[At times] we had so many different people working [on The Depot], there was no way to know what the costs even were, but we just kept going. Every time we did something, we found a way to make it more splendid.” New renderings revealed this week show the event space in the former train shed expanded 24,000 feet with posh boardrooms, a large glass-encased ballroom, and outdoor eating space complete with colored tile and … [Read more...] about The Depot in Minneapolis is closing in on its latest transformation
Monday, July 8, 2019 AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) -- A big downtown Augusta project might be in jeopardy. According to city documents, the Old Depot plans were supposed to be turned in a week ago. But the Downtown Development Authority says there's confusion among Augusta city leaders and the law department. According to the city, the developers did not meet the deadline to turn in plans. But, the city has also not kept a promise to Unysis, a factor that could collapse the deal. Unysis would lose parking if the area gets developed so Augusta is required to come up with 500 additional parking spots for Unysis before things can move forward. It turns out there is no parking plan and it's just one of the issues. "When you look at the depot building there, that building there is supposed to be turned into plans based on commercial space," said Ben Hasan, Augusta Commission, District 6. But Hasan is concerned there is no plan to show for it. The city says the depot developers, Bloc Global did … [Read more...] about No plans in place for old train depot?

And with more than $25 billion in revenue just from Amazon Web Services last year, Amazon is the world’s largest cloud services provider. Its sheer size and influence has caught the attention of regulators and lawmakers like Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who proposed a plan to break up Amazon and other technology companies in March. In its defense, Amazon said it makes up just 4% of all US retail sales. But taken as a whole, Amazon is much more than a retail platform. The company — which originally incorporated on July 5, 1994, under the business name “Cadabra” and started selling books under the new … [Read more...] about These Are All the Businesses You Never Knew Were Owned by Amazon
