Students and staff beware: a fresh wave of fraudulent emails have struck Colorado State University inboxes. Offers of fake jobs, faculty opportunities and demands to sign a digital document have popped up in higher volumes than usual this semester, with many coming from compromised CSU email addresses. The number of attacks in the past week, while not unusual, has come in at rates several times higher than the normal “background noise” level, said Steve Lovaas, CSU information security officer. Part of the reason is the time of the year. A start of a new semester means most everyone has new schedules and some people may be new to campus. “(The attackers) are counting on a few people not knowing for sure whether they should click or not and going ahead and saying ‘OK, I’ll click on this and do what they ask,’” Lovaas said. The start of last fall semester also saw a number of attacks aimed at getting access to student’s RamWeb accounts. … [Read more...] about Scam emails from compromised CSU accounts attack campus inboxes

Hillsboro School District responds to ‘threatening’ mass email
View Comments The district has made some technical changes to its mail services after a student sent an email across the district. Hillsboro School District officials say a technical oversight allowed an elementary school student to inadvertently send a threatening message to every student in the Hillsboro School District last week. According to Hillsboro School District spokeswoman Beth Graser, a student at Free Orchards Elementary School in Cornelius wrote an email from a generic district email account which read "Hey everybody get over here and kill this guy" at about 9 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 18. The email was sent to thousands of students across the district. Graser said officials were able to trace the email back to the student. Free Orchard's principal, Karen Murphy, met with the student and their parent, along with district security supervisor Sgt. Alex Oh and Chief Information Officer Don Wolff that day to discuss the incident. District officials don't believe the email was … [Read more...] about Hillsboro School District responds to ‘threatening’ mass email
Abroad in America: ‘Why Does it Cost So Much (Insert Extreme Word of Choice) Money to Run for Office?’
Sections SEARCH Skip to content Skip to site index Politics Subscribe Log In Log In Today’s Paper Advertisement Supported by BySarah Lyall Oct. 19, 2018 Welcome to The New York Times international election newsletter, where Sarah Lyall attempts to explain the U.S. midterms to readers outside the U.S. (and perhaps to herself). Eighteen days to go. One of the things that most perplexes and exasperates foreigners about politics in the United States, at least according to the emails you readers have been sending me, is the thorny topic of money. Why is there so much of it? What does it buy? What effect does it have? It is true that the midterm elections are awash in money, an obscene amount of it, a grand total of something like $1.5 billion with a B — and that’s before the homestretch. In contrast to the system in many other countries, where campaigns are financed mainly with public funds, candidates here can … [Read more...] about Abroad in America: ‘Why Does it Cost So Much (Insert Extreme Word of Choice) Money to Run for Office?’
Why your Office 365 apps may be running ‘so darn slow’
Q: After sticking with Office 2003 for the last decade and a half, I decided to take the jump into Office 365 and installed it earlier this week. But after a few days, I’m seriously considering uninstalling and going back to old reliable Office 2003 because the Office 365 apps are so darn slow. Word takes two or three minutes to open. I literally click it and walk away from my computer because I can’t stand just waiting and waiting for it to open. Once it finally opens it works, but is a bit sluggish. I never had this issue with 2003. What do you think? Should I give up and go back to 2003? Or is there something I can do to speed up 365? I’m running a Lenovo Y-580 laptop with an Intel i7-3610 processor and 8 gigabytes of memory, a 7200-rpm hard drive with 130 gigabytes of free space. My Windows 10 is up to date with all the latest and greatest. — Larry Vogel A: There are quite a few things that could be causing that slow performance. For starters, how fast is … [Read more...] about Why your Office 365 apps may be running ‘so darn slow’
Year-round contemporary comes with 365 feet on Lake Arrowhead
LIMERICK – Most homes are simply built. A special few are created. Here is one of the latter. The sterling lakefront contemporary “dates” from 1990, but has not dated at all. Over the past 20 years, the second-owner sellers carried out extensive updates and improvements (kitchen and both full baths, for example) that keep the home feeling as fresh as today. In recent years, the partially wooded 1.5 acre-lot has been selectively opened up, and beautifully landscaped and hardscaped. All around the gently sloping lawns, sun and shade gardens filled with perennials are proclaiming the arrival of spring, everywhere you look. That is, if you can take your eyes off the setting’s other magical element: 365 feet of frontage on the east shore of Lake Arrowhead, in a secluded location that, having very few houses and seeing little boat traffic, may well be the lake’s most desirable. On the frontage are a small, rudimentary dock that’s perfect for putting in a … [Read more...] about Year-round contemporary comes with 365 feet on Lake Arrowhead
