The wreckage of Captain James Cook’s HMS Endeavour may have been located off the coast of Rhode Island — a discovery that would cap a 25-year search to solve one of the greatest historical mysteries. The Rhode Island Marine Archaeology Project says it’s pinpointed the final resting place of the Endeavour, which explorer Cook helmed on a voyage from the UK to reach Australia for the first time in 1770, the Sydney Morning Herald reported Wednesday. Officials will formally announce the project’s findings on Friday and release a 3D rendering of where the vessel is believed to be located in the Newport Harbor, located off Goat Island in the Narragansett Bay. Endeavour was renamed the Lord Sandwich 2 and was used by the British to house American prisoners during the Revolutionary War. It was sunk with a dozen other ships in 1778 off Newport. (REUTERS/David Gray) (REUTERS) Archaeologists believe they have found the final resting place of Captain James Cook's ship HMS Endeavour off the East Coast of America. The possible discovery of the ship Cook sailed to Australia could solve one of the greatest ever maritime mysteries. Archaeologists from the Rhode Island Marine Archaeology Project (Rimap) think they have located the resting place of the famous vessel which carried Cook to Australia in 1770.
