Ellen Ciurczak Hattiesburg American Published 6:00 AM EST Jan 2, 2019 You could say Oak Grove High School is getting used to being tops in the state academically, but that doesn't make it any easier to maintain its high educational rankings or strive for excellence every year. This year, the high school ranked No. 3 in the state behind Enterprise and Lewisburg highs, with an accountability score of 829 out of 1,000. And that score takes into account all students — from struggling to excelling. "It's measuring from your lowest student academically to your highest student academically," said Principal Helen Price. "The scores represent the whole. "It encompasses a lot, and it's a lot to be proud of. This is all students showing growth and success in many areas." The state Department of Education released accountability rankings for 2017-18 in October and Oak Grove received an A, as did its Lamar County School District. Oak Grove High School is one of three high schools in the country recognized for its leadership in addressing safety and security issues on its campus. The award was presented during the National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security (NCS4) conference this summer in Louisville, Ky. The national center is headquartered on the campus of the University of Southern Mississippi. Other high schools (interscholastic) recognized were St. Mark's School of Texas, a private school in Dallas, and Littleton Public School, Littleton, Colo. Much larger collegiate and professional venues such as the University of Alabama’s Bryant-Denny Stadium, the American Airlines Center (NHL) in Dallas, Busch Stadium (MLB) in St. Louis and CenturyLink Field (NFL) in Seattle, Wash., were also recognized. The Oak Grove High School Wind Ensemble received a one-minute standing ovation this weekend after its performance at the Band of America/Musical for All performance in Lafayette, La. The group’s performance comes before the school’s four bands perform for the South Region state evaluations beginning April 16 at Oak Grove High School. Director Sharon Laird said the 56 members of the Wind Ensemble were invited to play at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. “Music for All is the concert version of it,” she said. “You have to submit an application and we were chosen from bands throughout the region. We performed before a packed house of judges from all across the United States, band directors and band students. It was a great event.” Laird said the group’s performance was well-received. “We got some really great comments from adjudicators,” she said.
