ALBANY, NY -- In the weeks since the U.S. Supreme Court gave the green light for all states to offer legal sports betting, there's been a lot of talk about how and when New York will get it started. There's still talk. But so far, there hasn't been a lot of action. And there are major unresolved issues that could keep it from happening this year. Neighboring New Jersey -- the state that brought the case that overturned a federal ban on sports books nationwide -- is moving forward. While it also faces unresolved issues, its state legislature is debating bills today and may have a law in place by the end of the week. That could bring sports betting this summer to locations like Atlantic City's casinos and the Monmouth Race Track. It may not happen so quickly in New York. While the Supreme Court decision cleared the way for all states to join Nevada in offering sports books, it's still up to each state to decide how to proceed. New York should be ahead of the game: There is a state … [Read more...] about Sports betting in New York: Unresolved questions may delay the action
By this fall, residents of Upstate New York might be free to place a legal bet on the outcome of a Syracuse-Clemson college football game, or whether the Buffalo Bills can score a touchdown on their first drive of the year or whether New York Yankee Aaron Judge can hit three home runs in a World Series game. Legal sports betting seems destined to arrive in New York soon, assuming state lawmakers and Gov. Andrew Cuomo can agree on the rules. Under at least one proposal, bettors would be able to place their wagers from anywhere using a mobile app as long as it's registered through one of four authorized Upstate New York casinos. Betting kiosks could also be set up at the state's racinos and Off Track Betting parlors. A U.S. Supreme Court ruling Monday cleared the way for all states to join Nevada, Delaware, Montana and Oregon in allowing sports betting. The ruling came in a lawsuit brought by the state of New Jersey, and overturned a law that prohibited sport wagers in the … [Read more...] about Legal sports betting in Upstate New York: What happens next, and when?
VERONA, NY -- At least one of Upstate New York's Indian nations is moving quickly to open a sports betting operation at its gambling casinos, now that the Supreme Court has cleared the way for sports books in New York. The Oneida Nation, which operates the big Turning Stone casino in Oneida County and two smaller gaming venues in Madison County, plans to start sports betting in the "near future," according to a statement from Joel Barkin, the nation's vice president for communications. State lawmakers are currently working on bills that would set up the rules for sports gaming only through the four new non Indian nation-owned casinos that have opened in Upstate New York in the last 16 months. The Oneidas contend the 1993 compact with the state that authorized them to operate casinos also allows them to "adopt any gaming specification that is permitted in New York, without any further approvals by the State," Barkin said in a statement. "The Nation previously has adopted numerous games … [Read more...] about Oneida Nation to take sports bets at Turning Stone, other venues, in ‘near future’
WASHINGTON, DC -- Wagering on professional and college sports could be coming to Upstate New York's casinos in the wake of a U.S. Supreme Court ruling today. In a 7-2 ruling, the court sided with New Jersey, which had sued to overturn a 25-year-old law that allowed sports betting in a handful of states, such as Nevada, while prohibiting it in most others. The court's decision now means all states can set up regulations and procedures to allow Vegas-style sports books to operate. In New York, for now, sports betting would only be allowed at or through the four non Indian Nation-owned casinos that opened across Upstate in the past 16 months: Rivers Casino & Resort in Schenectady, del Lago Resort & Casino near Waterloo in the Finger Lakes, Resorts World Catskills near Monticello, and Tioga Downs west of Binghamton in the Southern Tier. But the state still has to set up the rules. Earlier this year, a bill outlining New York's sports betting procedures was introduced by State … [Read more...] about Supreme Court decision paves way for legal sports betting in Upstate New York
