Vaccines offered protection from COVID-19 outbreak at Kentucky nursing home

A COVID-19 outbreak at a Kentucky nursing home was caused by a single unvaccinated employee, according to a new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study, but the residents and employees who were vaccinated were much better protected. The outbreak was linked to dozens of infections in both employees and residents, including in 22 residents and workers who had already been vaccinated. The virus was introduced from a single employee who was unvaccinated and symptomatic. However, attack rates were three to four times as high among unvaccinated residents and employees as among those who were vaccinated, and the vaccinated staff and residents were significantly less likely to experience symptoms or require hospitalization. ADVERTISEMENT During the outbreak, 46 COVID-19 cases were identified, CDC said, including cases in 26 residents, where 18 were fully vaccinated, and 20 health care personnel, where four were vaccinated. One vaccinated resident, who had … [Read more...] about Vaccines offered protection from COVID-19 outbreak at Kentucky nursing home

Cuomo book promotion on hold over nursing home deaths probe

New York Gov. Coronavirus outbreak in Kentucky nursing home linked to R.1 variant, prompts concern over vaccine impact

close Video Dr. Siegel glad EU regulator tells public J&J vaccine benefits outweigh risks Fox News medical contributor Dr. Marc Siegel weighs in on the possible Johnson & Johnson blood clot link. A so-called R.1 coronavirus lineage variant was detected in an outbreak at a Kentucky nursing facility where nearly all residents were vaccinated, according to one of the latest reports from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Health departments noted that coronavirus infections cropped up in a quarter of vaccinated residents, raising concerns about vaccine impact. The unnamed skilled nursing facility offered all residents and staff vaccinations beginning in January, with 90.4% of 83 residents taking up a vaccine and just over half of staffers accepting doses as well. An investigation by the Kentucky Department of Public Health revealed an unvaccinated, infected staffer initiated the outbreak in early March, ultimately … [Read more...] about Coronavirus outbreak in Kentucky nursing home linked to R.1 variant, prompts concern over vaccine impact

Europe lines up more shots, hoping to beat back virus surge

close Video Was Pausing Johnson & Johnson's Covid Vaccine a Good Idea? Paul Gigot interviews Dr. Marty Makary. BERLIN (AP) – Slow out of the gate, the European Union has ramped up its COVID-19 vaccination efforts, with the distribution of the Johnson & Johnson one-shot product this week adding to the momentum amid doggedly high infection rates on the continent. The EU's vaccine drive still lags far behind that of Britain or the United States. Only about 1 in 5 of the bloc’s 450 million inhabitants have received their first shot — approximately half the U.S. share. But European officials say they have turned the corner. "In the first quarter of 2021 only 10% of Germans were able to receive a first vaccination due to the shortage of vaccine," German Health Minister Jens Spahn said this week. "We achieved the next 10% in just three weeks." France celebrated several vaccine milestones recently, including dispensing at least one dose … [Read more...] about Europe lines up more shots, hoping to beat back virus surge
