Michael Osterholm has spent the past year as afraid of getting Covid as anyone else. “You know how many times I’ve woken up in the morning and said, I wonder if today’s the day I could get infected?” One of the world’s leading epidemiologists, he is reassured by the fact that he doesn’t go anywhere—“I’m the guy who has the same tank of gas in his car that he had three months ago”—but he, too, is desperate to be done with the pandemic. “I miss my grandkids,” he told Intelligencer from his Minneapolis-area home, his assured voice turning wistful. “My God , I miss my grandkids.” Osterholm, 67, is the director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota and has spent the past four decades studying epidemics, but he … [Read more...] about The Pandemic’s Dr. Doom Bets It All

Latest Anti-Coup Demonstrations in Myanmar Turn Deadly
At least two protesters are dead in Myanmar Monday amid another day of public demonstrations against last month’s military overthrow of the civilian government. The latest fatalities occurred in the city of Myitkyina, the capital of northern Kachin state. Photos taken by reporters with VOA’s Burmese service depict gunshot victims lying in the street in a pool of blood, some being attended to by emergency personnel. "The time to take action in defense of our democracy is now.” Myanmar: Trade Unions Call for Economic … [Read more...] about Latest Anti-Coup Demonstrations in Myanmar Turn Deadly
NYC High Schools Set to Reopen March 22
New York City high schools are set to reopen on March 22 after months of distance learning, officials announced Monday. The city’s decision to reopen again sets an important precedent, given it is home to one of the largest school districts in the country, the New York Times reported . The city has phased reopening for its elementary and middle school students, welcoming some elementary school students back to the classroom in December and middle school students in February. Officials prioritized getting younger students back to in-person learning because it is more difficult to conduct remote learning sessions with them. About half of New York City’s 488 high schools will fully reopen for full-time instruction for most, if not all, of their in-person students. The other half will reopen on a hybrid model. High school sports … [Read more...] about NYC High Schools Set to Reopen March 22
Spring Is Here: Near Record Warm Temps This Week, More Day Light Coming
BOSTON (CBS) — Better days are ahead. The four words we have all been longing to hear and wishing to be true for so many reasons, for so long. Our state, our region, is about to come alive. We’ve certainly had winters when we felt cooped up and removed from society before. We endured over 100” of snow back in 2015 and four straight nor’easters to end the season back in 2018…no doubt spring couldn’t come soon enough back then. But still, nothing can compare to 2020-2021. The pandemic has kept us locked down, shut out, and isolated. While this winter was fairly typical from a weather standpoint, I’m not sure we have ever needed spring so badly ever before. The wait is over.
