Nominees acm awards
Ahead of Sunday’s 93rd Academy Awards, Associated Press Film Writers Jake Coyle and Lindsey Bahr share their predictions for a ceremony that is forging on in the midst of the pandemic. BEST PICTURE The Nominees: “The Father” “Judas and the Black Messiah” “Mank” “Minari” “Nomadland” “Promising Young Woman” “Sound of Metal” “The Trial of the Chicago 7” COYLE: A contemplative character study made for $5 million and populated by non-professional actors, Chloé Zhao’s “Nomadland” is not your typical Oscar heavyweight. And yet it’s overwhelming the favorite, a roundly acclaimed movie from an exciting auteur that has already ruled at the Golden Globes, the BAFTAs and, most crucially, the producers and directors’ guilds. The weirdness of this unending pandemic awards season adds a drop of uncertainty to everything. But as much as I’d like to see “Sound of Metal,”“Promising Young Woman” or “Minari” sneak in for an upset, “Nomadland” is a near-lock, and an eminently … [Read more...] about Oscars 2021 predictions: Who will win in every major category at this year’s Academy Awards?
Canadian singer-songwriter The Weeknd is calling out the Grammys, blasting the Recording Academy as “corrupt,” and announced his decision to not submit his music to be considered for recognition despite the organization’s latest commitment to reform. Born Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, the three-time Grammy-winner was reportedly the catalyst for recent rules changes the Recording Academy made that eliminated the secret nominating-review committees that considered past nominees for awards. The Weeknd criticized the awards because he was shut out even though his album After Hours was one of the industry’s biggest albums, and “Blinding Lights” was one of the most-streamed songs of the year. “The trust has been broken for so long between the Grammy organization and artists that it would be unwise to raise a victory flag,” The Weeknd told Variety . The Super Bowl headliner said he would continue to boycott the awards. “I think the industry and public alike need to see the … [Read more...] about The Weeknd Slams Recording Academy, Vows to Continue Boycotting ‘Corrupt’ Grammys
NEW YORK (AP) — The Grammy Awards have changed its tune and voted to remove its anonymous nomination review committees — groups that determined the contenders for key awards at the coveted music show. The Recording Academy made the announcement Friday after the board of trustees met and approved the change. The decision came hours after The Associated Press reported that the academy was planning to discuss its nomination review committees and whether it was time to eliminate them. “It’s been a year of unprecedented, transformational change for the Recording Academy, and I’m immensely proud to be able to continue our journey of growth with these latest updates to our awards process,” Harvey Mason Jr., the academy’s interim president and CEO, said in a statement Friday. “This is a new Academy, one that is driven to action and that has doubled down on the commitment to meeting the needs of the music community. While change and progress are key drivers of our actions, one thing … [Read more...] about Grammys’ Nomination Committees Will No Longer Be Anonymous After High-Profile Snub
It may be hard to believe that there are still many “firsts” left to check off after 93 years of the Academy Awards, and yet this year there were a handful for Asian actors and filmmakers. Steven Yeun (“Minari”) became the first Asian American actor to be nominated for best actor. Riz Ahmed (“Sound of Metal”) is the first Muslim to be nominated for best actor. It’s the first time that there are two best actor candidates of Asian heritage. Youn Yuh-jung (“Minari”) is the first Korean woman to be nominated for any acting award. “Nomadland’s” Chloé Zhao is the first Asian woman to be nominated for best director. And, with director Lee Issac Chung ’s directing nomination for “Minari,” it’s also the first time there are two Asian nominees in that race. The historic gains spotlight where the organization has made progress and where there is still work to do, especially after a year in which Asian Americans were increasingly targeted in racist attacks.
