New Mexico State faces No. 2 Kansas in nationally televised matchup
Mark Rudi Las Cruces Sun-News Published 6:02 PM EST Dec 7, 2018 LAS CRUCES - Chris Jans has always talked about the opportunity when playing Power 5 schools or big-name programs since he arrived at New Mexico State. Playing the No. 2 team in the country and a college basketball blue blood on Saturday night on national television, the opportunity doesn't get much bigger than that for a regular season. There's no question the Aggies will be a heavy underdog in Kansas City, Missouri, Saturday night and have their hands full with the Jayhawks, but it's a great stage for NM State to be on. More: Jans: New Mexico State handling pregame scuffle with UNM internally New Mexico State big men improving as Aggies get healthy "It's going to be awesome until they tip the ball and then we're going to have our hands full," NM State coach Chris Jans said. Echols provides stability at point guard for NMSU women’s basketball
Derek Gonzales For the Sun-News Published 1:42 PM EST Nov 19, 2018 LAS CRUCES - The New Mexico State women’s basketball team entered the 2018 season with a bit of uncertainty surrounding the point guard position. Having lost two-year starter Zaire Williams to graduation, there was a question mark as to who would fill the role of running head coach Brooke Atkinson’s offense. Through just three games in the young season, it appears that junior-college transfer Rodrea Echols is the one that has been tasked with assuming the reigns left behind by Williams for the Aggies. Three inches taller than her predecessor at the position, Echols has added length to the Aggies’ backcourt but still brings the same type of pass-first mentality that has made NM State’s offense among the WAC’s best the last few years. Combined with a defensive tenacity and upbeat demeanor, Echols has been one of the reasons NM … [Read more...] about Echols provides stability at point guard for NMSU women’s basketball

NM State hoping Clayton Henry takes stranglehold on wing position
Mark Rudi Las Cruces Sun-News Published 6:34 PM EDT Nov 3, 2018 LAS CRUCES - At 6-foot-4 and 195 pounds, Clayton Henry gives New Mexico State a bigger player on the wing. Henry has a had a solid preseason, with good shooting and defense. And with his size, the Aggies are counting on Henry, a junior college transfer, to take over the three position as NM State opens the 2018-19 season on Tuesday night against North Dakota State at the Pan American Center. "Our hope is that he can take a stranglehold on that position and be productive so that we don't have to play so small and have three guards out on the court," NM State coach Chris Jans said. "We would like to have him out there as much as possible at the three because of his ability to shoot the basketball, stretch the defense and be a pretty good defender with some pretty good size. He is a key for us and so far, he's played well."
