WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Many Europeans are desperate for a coronavirus vaccine. But not just any vaccine. As AstraZeneca shots are rolling out to European Union nations this month, joining the Pfizer and Moderna doses already available, some people are baulking at being offered a vaccine that they perceive – fairly or not – as second-best. Poland began vaccinating teachers Friday with the AstraZeneca vaccine, and some had misgivings about being put in line for a vaccine they believe is less effective than the others. Ewelina Jankowska, the director of a primary and high school in Warsaw’s southern Wilanow district, said nobody in her school was enthusiastic about getting the AstraZeneca shot, although many signed up, eager for any protection against a virus that has upended their lives and their students’ schooling. “I still fear the illness more than the AstraZeneca vaccine,” said Jankowska, who was infected with COVID-19 in November and had a very slow recovery. … [Read more...] about Europeans Becoming Choosy About Which Vaccine They Want

Cyprus Activists: Hunters’ Lead Pellets Threaten Flamingos
LARNACA, CYPRUS - Conservationists in Cyprus are urging authorities to expand a hunting ban throughout a coastal salt lake network amid concerns that migrating flamingos could potentially swallow lethal quantities of lead shotgun pellets. Martin Hellicar, director of Birdlife Cyprus, said flamingos are at risk of ingesting the tiny pellets lying on the lakebed as they feed. Like other birds, flamingos swallow small pebbles to aid digestion, but can't distinguish between pebbles and the lead pellets. "Last year, we had tens of losses of flamingos," Hellicar said. Cyprus is a key stop on the migration path for many types of birds flying from Africa to Europe. The Larnaca Salt Lake, a wetlands network of four lakes, typically welcomes as many as 15,000 flamingos from colder climates to the southern coast of the island nation in the eastern Mediterranean. They stay through the winter and leave in March. Other waterfowl frequenting the lake include ducks, waders and seagulls. … [Read more...] about Cyprus Activists: Hunters’ Lead Pellets Threaten Flamingos
US calls for Turkey to release jailed philanthropist
State Department spokesperson Ned Price on Wednesday called for Turkey to immediately release the jailed Turkish philanthropist Osman Kavala and criticized as baseless charges against an American citizen that are included in Kavala's case. Kavala is one of a number of prominent figures amid thousands of individuals who were swept up in mass arrests by the Turkish government following the failed 2016 coup attempt against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan . Price, in his statement, described as “specious” allegations that Kavala attempted to overthrow the government and demanded his immediate release in line with a ruling by the European Court of Human Rights in December 2019, considered legally binding, that criticized the allegations as lacking sufficient evidence and his detention violating human rights conventions.
