(AP) — Forward Daniela Solis is the personification of an ever-growing connection between soccer in the United States and Mexico — one that's only going to intensify as the 2026 World Cup looms. Major League Soccer's All-Star Game against Liga MX counterparts, an expanded Leagues Cup competition next year and a series of women's exhibition matches this summer all aim to bridge the border. For MLS, that means tapping into the sizable Liga MX fan base in the United States. On the women's side, it's about growing the game overall. Solis is a native of Mexico but was a high school star in Oregon and played soccer at Portland State before transferring to Monterrey Tech, one of the top women's college teams in Mexico. "I'd always dreamed of playing professional soccer, but when I was in college, there was no professional soccer in Mexico," … [Read more...] about Mexico, US collaboration pave way for 2026 World Cup
Gov. Cuomo warns low turnout allows AOC’s chosen candidate to win District Attorney race
close Video Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez won't back down on comparing border detention facilities to concentration camps The progressive freshman Democrat lawmaker says she will never apologize for the remark after receiving criticism from both sides of the aisle. NEW You can now listen to Fox News articles! New York Governor Andrew Cuomo warned Monday that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's, D-N.Y. , chosen candidate for District Attorney could win Tuesday's election if Democratic voters failed to turn out -- a situation he said led to the freshman congresswoman's victory over former Rep. Joe Crowley, D-N.Y., in 2018. “If there’s a higher turnout, then more Democrats speak and … the outcome tends to be more representative of the overall Democratic opinion," Cuomo said, according to the New York Post. Cuomo indicated that turnout was the reason why Crowley lost to such a progressive candidate as Ocasio-Cortez, while he was able to beat … [Read more...] about Gov. Source: CBS extends Champions League deal for $250M a year
GENEVA (AP) — The Champions League is staying on CBS in the United States for an additional six years with parent company Paramount paying $250 million a year to renew its prime European soccer rights through 2030, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press on Friday. That's an increase of 250% from the previous deal, starting in the 2024-25 season when a new competition format creates a 50% increase in the number of games. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal has not been announced by Champions League organizer UEFA. The current Paramount deal is for $100 million per season for the English language rights for 2021-24. In May, CBS drew a U.S.-record for a Champions League final broadcast in English with a 2.76 million average audience for Real Madrid’s 1-0 win over Liverpool. The Spanish language rights in the U.S. – currently held by Univision for about $40 million per season through 2024 – have not yet been sold, the person told the … [Read more...] about Source: CBS extends Champions League deal for $250M a year
Oscars producer Will Packer finds fixing Hollywood a never-ending job
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 In "Beast," the Universal Pictures thriller released Friday, Idris Elba plays a father locked in a battle with a rogue lion in South Africa. Every time he thinks he's won, his feline foe comes roaring back. Will Packer, the movie's producer, can relate. The 48-year-old is one of the industry's more prolific filmmakers. Among his hits: the two "Ride Along" pictures, starring Ice Cube and Kevin Hart, which took in more than $300 million at the box office, and 2017's "Girls Trip," featuring Regina Hall and Tiffany Haddish. The top-grossing comedy that year, the film was the first by a Black female screenwriter to take in more than $100 million. But each triumph for diversity in Hollywood seems to come with setbacks as well. Case in point, the Academy Awards in March, where Packer led the first all-Black production team. People of color captured two of the top acting awards, a deaf … [Read more...] about Oscars producer Will Packer finds fixing Hollywood a never-ending job
Arts workers are increasingly stepping onto the political stage
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 NEW YORK - Christian Amato, a 34-year-old Bronx Democrat who ran a theater company in Greenwich Village before switching to politics, was outlining his positions on the arts and other matters at a sidewalk cafe the other day when his phone rang. "This might be an important endorsement," he said, excitedly. And it was. Local 1, the theatrical stagehands union, was calling to support his campaign for a state Senate seat representing parts of the Bronx and Westchester County, the latest development in a movement to gain political ground for America's more than 5 million arts workers. "That's fantastic. It means a lot to me," Amato said into the phone, between bites of avocado toast. "Listen, I'm on your side. I'm with you in this fight. ... I'll take the logo - and do you need my address? Do you guys do a check with the endorsement?" Trump (Mostly) Got His Revenge on Republicans Who Voted to Impeach
Surviving impeacher Dan Newhouse of Washington, who will very likely win in November. Photo-Illustration: Intelligencer; Photo: Bill Clark/CQ-Roll Call, Inc via Getty Images As we near the end of the 2022 primary season, all ten House Republicans who voted to impeach Donald Trump in February 2021 for instigating the January 6 insurrection have either announced their retirement or faced primary voters. All four retirees (Anthony Gonzalez of Ohio, John Katko of New York, Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, and Fred Upton of Michigan) ended their congressional careers under significant political duress. Four other impeachers were defeated in their primaries (in order of their demises, Tom Rice of South Carolina, Peter Meijer of Michigan, Jaime Herrera Beutler of Washington, and Liz Cheney of Wyoming). Two of the ten, David Valadao of California and Dan Newhouse of Washington, survived their primaries and will face voters again in November. What was the secret of survival for … [Read more...] about Trump (Mostly) Got His Revenge on Republicans Who Voted to Impeach

‘She-Hulk’ Is Big And Colorful, But The Marvel Comedy May Be Too Goofy
Proving “Moon Knight” wasn’t a fluke as Marvel-sized disappointments go, “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” is big, bright, colorful, and also too goofy for its own good. Trying to bend the mold is fine in theory, but the mix of sitcom-style tropes and gamma-irradiated powers yields a series that’s too weak to smash much of anything. Ironically, the most buzzed-about element in advance of the premiere — how the computer-generated title character looks — is the least of the show’s worries. For the most part those scenes are just fine, if perhaps a little reminiscent of “Avatar” in the way the Hulks tower over ordinary folk. READ MORE: Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office Investigating Incident At Lennard High School Instead, the show bogs down in the it’s-not-easy-being-green comedy and emphasis on quirkiness, feeling episodic in the extreme, after the obligatory origin story is out of the way. While there’s nothing wrong with screwball office comedy, based on the four episodes … [Read more...] about ‘She-Hulk’ Is Big And Colorful, But The Marvel Comedy May Be Too Goofy
Judge Temporarily Blocks DeSantis’ Bill Restricting ‘Woke’ Workplace Trainings
A judge temporarily blocked part of the Stop-WOKE Act Thursday, a piece of Florida legislation restricting critical race theory (CRT) in schools and businesses and allowing individuals to sue over failure to comply with state standards, over First Amendment concerns, according to court documents. The legislation banned CRT in schools, barred schools from hiring CRT consultants and banned schools and businesses from leveling guilt or blame on students or employees on the basis of their race and sex, targeting concepts like white privilege . U.S. District Judge Mark Walker took issue with the law’s restrictions on private businesses and imposed a temporary injunction against the latter provisions while a legal challenge brought by Florida corporations plays out. BREAKING: We’re suing Florida over the Stop WOKE Act, which severely restricts discussions of race and gender in college and university classrooms.
