Blue/The New York Times/REDUX Just weeks after the first U.S. case of polio in a decade was detected, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene reports that there is “likely local circulation of the virus.” On Friday, the department announced that it has detected poliovirus in the city’s wastewater , a sign that the causative agent for the eradicated disease may be making its way around New York. Health officials have encouraged New Yorkers to get vaccinated. “The risk to New Yorkers is real, but the defense is so simple — get vaccinated against polio,” New York City health commissioner Dr. Ashwin Vasan said on Friday. “With polio circulating in our communities, there is simply nothing more essential than vaccinating our children to protect them from this virus, and if you’re an unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated adult, please … [Read more...] about It Looks Like There’s Polio in New York City

Budget Office Warns Biden Will ‘Supercharge’ IRS To Audit Low Income and Middle Class Families
The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates that low-income and middle-class Americans will raise billions in additional tax revenue under the Democrats’ Inflation Reduction Act, according to a press release by Republicans on the Ways and Means Committee. The CBO investigation into the financial impact of Republican Idaho Sen. Michael Crapo’s failed amendment found that if it were to have passed, the Inflation Reduction Act would have lost at least $20 billion in revenue, according to the report. “CBO has not completed a point estimate of this amendment but the preliminary assessment indicates that amendment 5404 would reduce the ‘non-scorable’ revenues resulting from the provisions of section 10301 by at least $20 billion over the FY2022-FY2031 period,” the CBO stated, according to Ways and Means GOP. Egypt appoints 13 new ministers in Cabinet reshuffle
CAIRO (AP) — President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi of Egypt announced a Cabinet reshuffle Saturday to improve his administration's performance as it faces towering economic challenges stemming largely from Russia’s war in Ukraine. The Cabinet shake-up, which was approved by parliament in an emergency session, affected 13 portfolios, including health, education, culture, local development and irrigation ministries. Also included in the reshuffle was the tourism portfolio, a key job at a time when Egypt is struggling to revive the lucrative sector decimated by years of turmoil, the pandemic and most recently the war in Europe. The changes, however, didn’t affect key ministries including foreign, finance, defense and the interior, which is responsible for the police force. El-Sissi said the shake-up came in consultation with Prime Minister Mustafa Madbouly. He said in a Facebook post that the changes aimed at “developing the governmental performance in some important files ... … [Read more...] about Egypt appoints 13 new ministers in Cabinet reshuffle

A suspect has been accused of driving into three people, among them a mother and child, in Queens on Wednesday. The suspect was fleeing a traffic stop when the incident occurred, the New York Post reported Thursday, adding it happened at the intersection of Wyckoff Avenue and George Street in Ridgewood. Officers were talking with the driver of the SUV as a mother pushed her two-year-old daughter, who was riding in a stroller, across the street. However, the moment one officer motioned to another in a nearby police cruiser the driver appeared to hit the gas and speed away. He apparently struck the mother, her child, and a 35-year-old man. The child appeared to be laying in the street but rose up from the ground as officers and the woman rushed over to pick her up. A man wearing a bright yellow shirt was seen being thrown into the back of a nearby delivery truck. “The intersection quickly flooded with people who had run outside to see what the commotion was about. … [Read more...] about GRAPHIC VIDEO: Driver Accused of Hitting Mom, Toddler on NYC Street
R Kelly accuser to give key testimony on trial-fixing charge
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 2 CHICAGO (AP) — R. Kelly’s federal trial in Chicago that starts Monday is in many ways a do-over of his 2008 state child pornography trial, at which jurors acquitted the singer on charges that he produced a video of himself when he was around 30 having sex with a girl no older than 14. There’s one big difference: This time, prosecutors say, she will testify. Kelly goes into Chicago federal court already sentenced by a New York federal judge to 30-year prison term for a 2021 conviction on charges he parlayed his fame to sexually abuse other young fans. Among the most serious charges the Grammy Award winner faces at his federal trial is conspiracy to obstruct justice by rigging the 2008 trial, including by paying off and threatening the girl to ensure she did not testify. Testimony by the woman, now in her 30s and referred to in filings only as “Minor 1,” will be pivotal. The charges … [Read more...] about R Kelly accuser to give key testimony on trial-fixing charge
