May 18, 2022 by nymag.com Leave a Comment

You can’t get rid of me. Photo: Noam Galai/Getty Images Bill de Blasio can’t be mayor anymore, no one voted for him for president , and a run for governor was dead before it started, so he’s running for Congress. On Friday, the former mayor went on MSNBC’s Morning Joe to announce he is running in one of the city’s newly formed congressional districts. “The polls show people are hurting. They need help, they need help fast, and they need leaders who can actually get them help now and know how to do it. I do know how to do it from years of serving the people of this city. And so today, I’m declaring my candidacy for Congress in the Tenth Congressional District of New York,” de Blasio said. The news wasn’t exactly a surprise, given he had launched an exploratory committee on Wednesday. In addition to de Blasio, Assemblymember Yuh-Line Niou and State Senator Brad Hoylman say they are considering a run. De Blasio will run in the Tenth Congressional District, … [Read more...] about De Blasio Finally Settles on a New Job: Running for Congress

D.C. Attorney General Lets the Trump Swamp Win Again

May 20, 2022 by www.thedailybeast.com Leave a Comment

The District of Columbia’s attorney general promised accountability for nonprofits that took advantage of the Trump administration’s era of grift. Yet after D.C.’s top prosecutor let the Trump family off easy last month for misusing donor funds, The Daily Beast has discovered yet another recent example of a gentle settlement for executives—with Trumpworld connections—accused of personally enriching themselves with charitable funds. Last year, Attorney General Karl Racine sued the corporation that nearly ruined the United States’ presence at the 2020 World Expo in Dubai. The event presented a lucrative opportunity to represent the nation at the modern World’s Fair, and the State Department initially handed it over to Pavilion USA 2020, a nonprofit started by two political players in Washington. But Racine’s office says it eventually discovered these two men misused their nonprofit to pay themselves handsomely—and dupe well-meaning investors into pouring money into a failed … [Read more...] about D.C. Silent Invasion By Deborah Birx Harper. 506 pp. $29.99 - - - On April 23, 2020, with the United States in the throes of the first covid-19 wave, President Donald Trump opined that doctors should investigate whether shining ultraviolet light or injecting disinfectant into the body might treat the disease. To back him up, he turned to the White House coronavirus response coordinator, the physician and public health expert Deborah Birx. "Deborah, have you ever heard of that - the heat and the light . . . relative to this virus?" Birx, though visibly uncomfortable, answered politely, "Not as a treatment." She went on to say that fever does help the body fight infection. She managed to add, "But I've not seen heat or light -" before Trump interrupted her. I was a physician then on the front lines of the pandemic in a New York City intensive care unit, and I felt angry at Birx when I saw that clip.
