MANCHESTER — Former White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer said Republicans are likely to lose control of the U.S. House in 2018, but could then grab the majority back in 2020.The decision of House Speaker Paul Ryan not to seek reelection reminds him of 1994 when then-Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell’s unexpected retirement led to the GOP taking control in that chamber.“Mitchell’s abdication of the majority leadership was the coup de grace, it just sent all the signals that the Democrats would not hold the Senate and I fear the same signal was sent by Ryan stepping down,” Fleischer said.“There’s just a huge wave out there, a huge anti-Trump wave out there.”But Fleischer said Democratic leaders are captives of the far-left wing of their party and will overplay their hand if they win the House.“Democrats are going to have a huge problem if they take the majority unless they take it by 30 or 40 seats. On the issue of government transparency, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest publicly lamented that President Obama is not getting enough credit. Writing to the editor in Wednesday’s New York Times, Earnest criticized a recent Times story about lack of transparency in the Clinton and Trump campaigns. He took issue with Jim Rutenberg’s piece for failing to acknowledge “the important and unprecedented steps” taken by the Obama administration, “to fulfill the president’s promise to lead the most transparent White House in history.” As an example of this administration’s transparency, Earnest cited the online database of more than 5.5-million names of visitors to the White House, as well as “mind-boggling amounts of data” available online at Data.gov. Further, he asserted that “as a matter of policy,” Mr. Obama “invites” White House press to cover his … [Read more...] about CBS News Logo White House press secretary defends Obama on transparency
Last Updated Jul 21, 2017 10:11 PM EDT White House press secretary Sean Spicer is resigning, effective next month.Spicer resigned Friday morning, shortly after President Trump selected Anthony Scaramucci as communications director. Scaramucci's hiring was a factor in his resignation, as was Spicer's diminishing role in the White House, CBS News Chief White House Correspondent Major Garrett reports. A source with direct knowledge of the situation said there was a Friday White House communications meeting in which the new communications director was announced, and Spicer made the decision to resign right before the meeting when he learned Scaramucci had the job. Spicer confirmed his resignation about two hours after the news broke on Friday, saying he will stay on until August. On Friday night, Mr. Trump tweeted that Spicer is a "wonderful person" who took "tremendous abuse from the Fake News Media." CBS News previously reported Spicer had been seeking a more strategic … [Read more...] about CBS News Logo Sean Spicer resigns as White House press secretary
