JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The New Orleans Saints open their exhibition slate Thursday night with a road contest against the Jacksonville Jaguars. In the first preseason game, both teams will likely rest of their veteran starters, but there will be plenty of action for players currently on the roster bubble. This will be the first game action in a Saints uniform for all three of the backup quarterbacks -- Tom Savage, Taysom Hill and J.T. Barrett. It's unclear how much any of them will play, but against a stout Jacksonville defense, impressive plays could give any of the quarterbacks an early leg up in the competition. NEW ORLEANS – Garrett Griffin’s welcome-to-the-NFL experience occurred in the first week of his rookie season. The New Orleans Saints opened with the Oakland Raiders and, in preparation, placed an emphasis on blocking linebacker Khalil Mack. Griffin, on the practice squad directly out of Air Force, was assigned to play Mack on the scout team.So every play Griffin was chipped, blocked, scraped and, in general, targeted by his new teammates.“I was just trying to make myself useful,” said the tight end, looking over the limbs that took a beating that week. “You definitely gain an appreciation for the type of physicality those guys have.”Those eye-opening experiences are now long in the past. Griffin is now in his third camp with the Saints, having logged more than a season and a half on the practice squad before being activated on the 53-man roster for the final five games of the season. To make the roster again, Griffin will have to emerge from a … [Read more...] about Air Force graduate Garrett Griffin works to recapture a spot with the New Orleans Saints
New Orleans Saints running back Mark Ingram wants to run for more than 1,000 yards again this season, even though he'll miss the first four games because of an NFL suspension. "Of course, you want to rush for 1,000 yards," Ingram said when listing his goals for 2018 during a press conference on Thursday, the first day of practice for the Saints' veterans at training camp. "It'll be more of a challenge in 12 games, but it's attainable. I like to believe in myself. I've had 1,000 scrimmage yards for four years in a row, five years in a row, something like that, so just keep those going. "Those are just numbers that you shoot for, that you aim for. At the end of the day, I just want to be the best player, the best teammate I can be. Do everything I can to the best of my ability to help us win games and prepare us to get ready for the season. I'm going to do everything I can to be in the best shape, the best condition, the best me so I can help this team obtain our goals. We want to … [Read more...] about Mark Ingram counting down to New Orleans Saints’ rushing record
By Larry Holder | Posted July 24, 2018 at 12:27 PM | Updated July 24, 2018 at 12:28 PM Michael DeMocker, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune Projecting the 2018 New Orleans Saints 53-man roster heading into training camp might appear simple. The starting lineup could be tinkered a touch, but nothing unexpected. Depth at a few positions should make life a tad bit easier for the coaching staff. But you never know if an injury might derail plans or if someone blows the doors off training camp and the preseason. Which is why I’m certain my weekly training camp roster projections will take some twists and turns leading up to Week 1. Here’s a look at my Saints 53-man roster projections heading into the start of training camp Thursday: Quarterback (3) Drew Brees, Tom Savage, Taysom Hill Analysis: This may seem like an easy battle to project. I’d argue the Saints may ponder only keeping two quarterbacks on the roster. We all know Brees isn’t going anywhere. The team … [Read more...] about New Orleans Saints pre-training camp 53-man roster projections
