Insidious: James Wan and Leigh Whannell of Saw’s New Movie
Eras tend to get the horror movies they deserve, and, though far from perfect, Saw , a modestly budgeted 2004 shocker from the Australian team of writer Leigh Whannell and director James Wan, felt like the right horror film for its moment. Though unrelievedly grim and set for long stretches in a single room, Saw would go on to become an improbably huge success, spawning numerous sequels and helping to set the table for similar films both nastily resonant (such as Eli Roth’s Hostel ) and just nasty (virtually everything else). Indelicately, if not entirely inaccurately, labeled “torture porn,” the style focused on the far reaches of mental and physical distress that the human body could endure. It was the perfect horror mode for a decade that shattered the public consensus on the ethics of torture as a national policy. Torture porn tapped into the underlying fear that the things we were letting happen in the corners of darkened room in the interest of national security might some … [Read more...] about Insidious: James Wan and Leigh Whannell of Saw’s New Movie

Colorado, now an abortion “safe haven,” prepares for new challenges
Fourth-generation Texan Leah Payne moved to Denver last year in the wake of a new Texas abortion law that imposed some of the strictest abortion restrictions in the nation. “We left our family, friends, sold our house. We couldn’t live somewhere where abortion access was constantly under attack,” Payne told The Denver Post. At 19, Payne, who was on birth control, got pregnant. She didn’t have insurance at the time and decided to have an abortion at a Planned Parenthood clinic. “It was put out there as this big, bad thing that was traumatizing, but I never felt that,” Payne said. “Now, I’m 32, I’m a homeowner here in Denver and have a really successful career, a great partner, and I don’t think any of those things would have happened if I had not had an abortion at 19.” Payne chose her new home after learning about access to reproductive care in the state, and many Americans who woke up on Friday with fewer rights than they had a day prior may be forced to make similar … [Read more...] about Colorado, now an abortion “safe haven,” prepares for new challenges

Gov. Murphy Condemns Report Of Draft Opinion Suggesting SCOTUS May Overturn Roe V. Wade: ‘No Impact On New Jersey State Law’
TRENTON, N.J. (CBS) — New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy is calling on Congress to pass federal legislation protecting the reproductive rights of all Americans. Murphy delivered remarks Tuesday morning following a report of a draft opinion suggesting the Supreme Court may overturn Roe v. Wade, the 1973 case that legalized abortion . READ MORE: Off-Duty Philadelphia Police Officer Henry Gonski III Killed In Somerton Crash While On Way Home From Work He condemned the idea of overturning Roe, but said New Jersey wouldn’t be affected because the state has enshrined the right to an abortion into state law. “If the Court takes this awful step, this decision will have no impact on New Jersey state law or the full right to reproductive freedom under our state law,” Murphy said. “This remains fully intact, because here in New Jersey, instead of hoping for the best, we prepared ourselves for the worst.” Murphy took action to protect reproductive rights after Justice Arm Coney Barrett … [Read more...] about Gov. Older Americans ‘Age In Place,’ Millennials Struggle To Find Homes
0 This post is sponsored and contributed by Personal Finance With more seniors than ever aging in place and choosing not to sell the family home, there is a critical shortage in available properties. Newrez , Brand Partner Posted | Updated Reply (Originally published by Newrez.) With more seniors than ever aging in place and choosing not to sell the family home, an estimated 1.6 million fewer properties are now available in a market already experiencing a critical shortage, according to Freddie Mac. That stay-put trend is crashing into the rising demand for housing from the huge millennial generation: fewer homes for sale will continue to put upward pressure on already overheated home prices. While some homeowners are choosing to age in place, others simply can't afford the high costs of moving. Today's housing market is incredibly pricey, and some can't afford to move into another home, even a smaller … [Read more...] about Older Americans ‘Age In Place,’ Millennials Struggle To Find Homes
