Loyola beats Nevada 69-68, continues improbable NCAA run

· March 22, 2018 ·

ATLANTA — With Loyola-Chicago clinging to a one-point lead and only 6.3 seconds remaining, Marques Townes sank a 3-pointer from in front of the Ramblers’ bench to continue their improbable NCAA Tournament run. Townes scored 18 points, including the key 3-pointer, to lead Loyola to a 69-68 win over the Wolf Pack in Thursday night’s NCAA South Regional semifinal. The win leaves the No. 11th-seeded Ramblers one victory from a Final Four appearance. Not bad for a program that hasn’t been in the Sweet 16 in 33 years. Townes charged down the court, pumping his fist, as Nevada called a timeout following the crucial 3-pointer. Caleb Martin answered with a 3 for Nevada, but this time the Wolf Pack couldn’t extend their string of second-half comebacks in the tournament. Loyola (31-5) awaits the winner of the Kansas State-Kentucky game in Saturday’s regional final. Martin led Nevada (29-8) with 21 points. Twin brother Cody Martin had 16. Jordan Carolina had … [Read more...] about Loyola beats Nevada 69-68, continues improbable NCAA run

More California pharmacies to distribute opioid overdose drug

· July 6, 2018 ·

A month after the California Department of Public Health issued a statewide standing order for naloxone, the emergency antidote for opioid overdoses, the agency has authorized 27 organizations across the state — mostly pharmacies and addiction treatment centers — to distribute and administer the medication without a prescription. The order was issued by agency director Dr. Karen Smith on June 8. Previously, organizations needed a prescription from an individual physician in order to distribute naloxone. Smith’s order functions as a standing prescription for organizations that have a hard time finding such a doctor — a problem in small and rural communities where physician shortages are common, and addiction medicine is outside the purview of many doctors’ practices. “It’s one step in our multifaceted approach to increasing ready access to naloxone,” Smith said in an interview last month about the order. Among those newly authorized to … [Read more...] about More California pharmacies to distribute opioid overdose drug

Teen with Cerebral Palsy Crosses Finish Line at Santa Run in Las Vegas

· December 8, 2019 ·

A young woman with cerebral palsy achieved an important milestone Saturday in Las Vegas, Nevada.Seventeen-year-old Mena Hawkins has trained since March to participate in the Las Vegas Great Santa Run which takes place every year, according to WXII. The teenager who normally uses a wheelchair to get around, used her reverse walker to complete the mile-long course. Six years ago, she participated in the Santa Run but was still on her way to the finish line when the event ended. She and her dad, Roger, were forced to get on the sidewalk because officials had opened up the roads to traffic. However, that did not stop Mena from making plans to try again. “I felt like it was a huge achievement,” she said. This year, her training regimen included walking routes with hills and lifting free weights in the gym. She even trained on days when it was 110 degrees outside. When she got her training time down to 42 minutes, Mena said the entire experience was “really … [Read more...] about Teen with Cerebral Palsy Crosses Finish Line at Santa Run in Las Vegas
