The Hotline mailbag is published each Friday. Send questions to [email protected] or hit me on Twitter: @WilnerHotline . Due to volume — and in some cases, the need for research — not all questions will be answered the week of submission. Thanks for your understanding. Note: We’ve received a slew of questions about football matters. For this edition, however, we’re sticking with basketball — and the commissioner search, of course. We’ll get back to football next week. Some questions have been edited for brevity. Are Oregon State fans going to regret the Wayne Tinkle extension as much as Washington fans regret the Mike Hopkins one in a couple years? Curious how often the “extensions based on one NCAA run” usually work out. @gohuskies1978 Thoughts on Tinkle’s extension? @boring_guy44 It’s entirely possible the Beavers will one day regret the extension. In fact, we’d argue that unsavory end-game is more likely than not. Only athletic … [Read more...] about Hotline mailbag: The risk of Wayne Tinkle’s extension; Arizona’s search; states of play at Cal and Stanford

Avalanche dominates odd second period in 5-4 win over Minnesota
The numbers didn’t add up. But reality proved that it was true. In the second period Monday night, the Avalanche was whistled for all three penalties, playing shorthanded for 5:06. But when the period was over, the Avs had outshot Minnesota 20-5 and outscored the Wild 4-0 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn. Red-hot Colorado, which took the first four penalties of the game, went on to defeat the Wild 5-4 to extend its NHL-leading point streak to 15 games (13-0-2). Minnesota rallied from a 4-1 deficit with two late power-play goals, the latter on a 6-on-4 attack with goalie Cam Talbot on the bench for an extra attacker. Maybe it’s just one team having another team’s number. The Avs are now 5-1-1 against Minnesota and have outscored the Wild 16-5 in the last three meetings. The finale of the eight-game season series is Wednesday in the same building, and it will probably be chippy. The final 1:07 on Monday featured seven penalties, including misconducts from the Wild’s Nick … [Read more...] about Avalanche dominates odd second period in 5-4 win over Minnesota

School districts, colleges and the NCAA have protocols in place to ensure fair treatment for kids of all genders and gender identities. One of the plaintiffs who recently filed a lawsuit in Connecticut alleging that transgender girls have an advantage over cisgender girls … [Read more...] about What’s really behind the GOP’s attacks on transgender athletes
Surging Nuggets win seventh in a row following Michael Malone’s ejection
Nuggets coach Michael Malone brought the fire. The rest of the guys brought the pain. Following Malone’s second-quarter ejection Wednesday night against the Spurs, the Nuggets played with a passion their coach has begged for. It translated to a 106-96 win – Denver’s seventh consecutive victory and its 16th in 19 games. Now 33-18, the Nuggets will test their streak, again, against the Spurs on Friday. “That’s been brewing for a while, and my job as a head coach is to fight and protect all of my players,” Malone said. Nikola Jokic more than made up for the absence of Jamal Murray with another superlative night. Playing a more aggressive brand of basketball than usual, Jokic finished with 25 points, nine rebounds and 10 assists. While Murray missed his second consecutive game with knee soreness, Jokic cut the Spurs’ defense apart with outlandish passes and unmatched touch. “He’s doing that the whole year,” Jokic said of Malone coming to his defense. “He’s always talking to the … [Read more...] about Surging Nuggets win seventh in a row following Michael Malone’s ejection
