The crackdown against opponents of Myanmar’s military takeover intensified Sunday as security forces were reported to have fired on protesters, killing at least five people in the deadliest day of demonstrations since the February 1 coup. Witnesses say police used tear gas, rubber bullets, water cannons and in some cases live ammunition in the country’s biggest city Yangon. According to the Associated Press, photos of shell cases from live ammunition were posted on social media. Police also aggressively sought to break up protests in Mandalay and Dawei. Popular protests have been staged across Myanmar on a daily basis since the military detained de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other members of the civilian government last month, claiming widespread fraud in last November’s election, which Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy party won in a landslide. Former Notre Dame Star Louis Nix III, 29, Found Dead
Former Notre Dame star and Houston Texan Louis Nix III, 29, was found dead in Florida three days after being reported missing by his other. According to NBC Sports via Pro Football Talk : …the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office pulled a car from a pond near Nix’s apartment that matched his vehicle’s description. Nix was last seen alive Tuesday. Nix, a third-round choice of the Texans in 2014, was shot in December while putting air in the tires of his car. The bullet, Nix explained at the time, ricocheted off his sternum and entered his lung. He had surgery to remove it. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has not indicated the shooting is related to Nix’s death. The Sheriff’s Office did not provide any information about Nix’s condition or where exactly he had been found. Nix III, a 2014 draft pick by the Houston Texans, spent time with Houston and the New York Giants. Lowell Georgia, award-winning former Denver Post photographer, dies at age 87
Lowell Georgia, a former Denver Post photographer who covered the inauguration and funeral of President John F. Kennedy, as well as the South Platte River Flood in 1965, among other news assignments, died Wednesday at Good Samaritan Hospital in Lafayette. He was 87. In 1963, Georgia was named the National Press Photographers Association photographer of the year. Over the course of his career, which included assignments for National Geographic magazine and the Green Bay Press-Gazette, Georgia photographed President Dwight D. Eisenhower, Green Bay Packers Coach Vince Lombardi and quarterback Bart Starr, and comedian George Burns, among other notables.
