The money is for enhancing armaments production, including artillery and ammunition; developing and strengthening the training of Ukrainian soldiers and assisting Ukraine’s efforts to demine areas. “All the countries that came to Copenhagen came with the intention of supporting Ukraine,” Danish Defense Minister Morten Bødskov said at the end of the one-day meeting of 26 nations and the European Union. British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace said the meeting proved that Russian President Vladimir “Putin’s ambition (of the West losing its … [Read more...] about Western nations pledge more military support for Ukraine

New York is roaring back from the worst of the pandemic. Why isn’t San Francisco?
NEW YORK CITY — On a scorching summer evening, with humidity choking the city, thousands of sweaty visitors lined up to ascend almost 1,400 feet up in the air. Children squealed in delight as they disembarked on the 57th floor Summit observatory at the One Vanderbilt tower, as all of Manhattan unfolded in front of them through glass windows, from the delicate, silvery tip of the Chrysler Building to One World Trade Center catching the setting sun, a symbol of the city’s rebirth from a 2001 tragedy. San Francisco also knows how to attract people during these bizarre times — take Outside Lands , for instance — but there’s a difference between an annual extravaganza and, in Summit’s case, a typical Monday. Lethargic downtown San Francisco lacks the energy and sheer mass of daily locals and tourists that have reinvigorated Midtown Manhattan and beyond to provide a sense of how life in this metropolis used to be. There’s always been a disparity — New York has 10 times the … [Read more...] about New York is roaring back from the worst of the pandemic. Why isn’t San Francisco?

Home prices hit a new record high in the second quarter
(CNN) Despite rising mortgage rates that dampened sales, home prices continued to climb higher in the second quarter, with many more cities seeing double-digit price gains than in the first part of the year. The median single-family existing home price in the second quarter was $413,500 -- the first time this quarterly price has ever risen above $400,000, according to the latest quarterly report from the National Association of Realtors. Home prices for the quarter were up 14.2% from a year ago, slightly slower than the 15.4% year-over-year price increase experienced in the first quarter. A majority, 80%, of US metro areas saw double-digit home price increases last quarter, or 148 out of 185. That's up from 70% of cities in the first quarter. "Home prices have increased at a pace that far exceeds wage gains, especially for low- and middle-income workers," said Lawrence Yun, NAR's chief economist. Cornyn: DOJ Owes Americans ‘Honest Explanation’ for Mar-a-Lago Raid
Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) is calling on the Department of Justice (DOJ) to give Americans “an honest explanation” for the raid of Mar-a-Lago Monday. “It’s been 72 hours since the Justice Department took the unprecedented step of raiding a former President’s home,” Cornyn said in a statement, adding: Reports this relates to a dispute over Presidential records are either a thinly veiled excuse or an abuse of power, if true. Given the Democrats’ history of weaponizing the Department of Justice, including the FBI, for political purposes, the American people deserve an honest explanation. This Administration has targeted parents who challenged the actions of their local school boards, suggesting they are domestic terrorists, while downplaying potential crimes by a member of the President’s own family. Given this history, the American people are understandably skeptical, and deserve to know the truth. The longer the Attorney General remains silent, the more this looks like a … [Read more...] about Cornyn: DOJ Owes Americans ‘Honest Explanation’ for Mar-a-Lago Raid
Give and take: West gives Ukraine weapons, bans Russian coal
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 18 KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — On a day of give and take, Western nations made more pledges to send arms to Ukraine while the European Union's full ban on Russian coal imports kicked in Thursday amid intelligence claims that sanctions against Moscow were hurting its defense exports. Germany, seen early in Russia's invasion as a lackadaisical Ukrainian ally, is making what Chancellor Olaf Scholz described as a “massive” break with its past by sending weapons to the war-ravaged country. Scholz said Germany "is shipping arms — a great, great many, sweeping and very effective. And we will continue to do so in the coming time.” His government has approved military exports of at least $710 million and plans to provide further financial aid to Ukraine, the chancellor said. Hell Week: How Trump’s Problems All Converged at Once
With the FBI’s raid of Mar-a-Lago this week, former President Donald Trump is at one of his lowest moments since he left office. After fighting off a subpoena for half a year, Trump was finally forced to testify on Wednesday at a closed-door deposition with New York Attorney General Letitia James over allegations of bank and insurance fraud at his family company—a civil case which could force it to close shop. He pleaded the Fifth, still a self-incriminating tactic for a man who, during his 2016 presidential campaign, once declared: “If you’re innocent, why are you taking the Fifth Amendment?” While the move may spare him of criminal liability, it will only bolster the AG’s case in civil court, where staying silent can legally be perceived as damning evidence of its own. The prospect of another long and damaging trial is also hanging over the Trump Organization and the ex-president’s former right-hand money man, Allen Weisselberg. According to Duncan Levin, an attorney … [Read more...] about Hell Week: How Trump’s Problems All Converged at Once
