Israel shoots down Hezbollah drones over Mediterranean
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 JERUSALEM (AP) — The Israeli military on Saturday said it shot down three unmanned aircraft launched by the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah heading toward an area where an Israeli gas platform was recently installed in the Mediterranean Sea. The launch of the aircraft appeared to be an attempt by Hezbollah to influence U.S.-brokered negotiations between Israel and Lebanon over their maritime border, an area that is rich in natural gas. In a statement, the Israeli said the aircraft were spotted early on and did not pose an “imminent threat.” Nonetheless, the incident drew a stern warning from Israel’s caretaker prime minister, Yair Lapid. “I stand before you at this moment and say to everyone seeking our demise, from Gaza to Tehran, from the shores of Lebanon to Syria: Don’t test us,” Lapid said in his first address to the nation since taking office on Friday. “Israel knows … [Read more...] about Israel shoots down Hezbollah drones over Mediterranean
Uvalde schools police chief resigns city council post
Pedro "Pete" Arredondo, whose delayed response to the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, has been widely criticized resigned from his post on the city council, the local newspaper reported Saturday. "After much consideration, I regret to inform those who voted for me that I have decided to step down as a member of the city council," Arredondo told the Uvalde Leader-News. "The mayor, the city council, and the city staff must continue to move forward without distractions." Shortly after the article was published, however, the City of Uvalde released a statement saying it had not heard directly from Arredondo. "While it is the right thing to do, no one from the City has seen a letter or any other documentation of his resignation, or even spoken with him," read the statement, circulated by news outlets. Officials noted that they had learned of Arredondo's resignation only from the Leader-News's article. Arredondo, his lawyer, and a person who has handled … [Read more...] about Uvalde schools police chief resigns city council post
Play tells story of filling in pools rather than integrating

(AP) — As American citizens celebrated freedom and liberty in their nation on Independence Day, 1961, a government founded on notions of the inalienable human rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness took action at a local level to deny those rights to their fellow citizens whose skin was not white. This little-taught chapter of local history is being brought to life in an original play, “Buried Deep,” produced through Endstation Theatre Company, affiliated with Randolph College. On that sweltering July day in Lynchburg, as many residents sought the relief offered by public pools, the city closed those pools down because some Black residents went to swim in the whites-only pools at Miller and Riverside parks. They were exercising their civil rights and making intentional strides toward integration and … [Read more...] about Play tells story of filling in pools rather than integrating
