The Nassau County Police Department arrested 59 people on heroin charges, including four alleged dealers, in the past week as part of crackdown in Massapequa, a community especially hard-hit by the opioid epidemic, officials said Thursday. Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said the arrests were part of a hot-spot crackdown based on the department’s new ODMAP technology, which gives police real-time intelligence on overdoses across the county. “This is the first spot, the hottest spot right now in the county and we’re going after it,” said Ryder. “We’re going to take it back, street by street, neighborhood by neighborhood.” Nassau police officers, including Ryder, fanned out at the Long Island Rail Road station in Massapequa Thursday morning, handing out flyers to commuters, warning them to lock their car doors. A Nassau County jail nurse faces official misconduct and conspiracy charges after authorities say she started a romantic relationship with an inmate and smuggled marijuana into the facility for him. Carroll Ann Clarke Pilgrim, 31, of Far Rockaway, Queens, pleaded not guilty Thursday to the misdemeanor charges in Hempstead district court. District Court Judge Maxine Broderick released her conditionally to probation officials. Records show authorities arrested the nurse Wednesday at the East Meadow jail, charging her in a scheme investigators have alleged began about six months ago. Clarke Pilgrim allegedly conspired to bring marijuana into the jail to inmate Laphael McClenic, 33, whose trial on robbery and weapon charges is underway, according to court records. The nurse also told an investigator from the Nassau district attorney’s office she met McClenic while doing her job, and brought marijuana into the jail multiple times, the records also say.
