Monaco restored their three-point lead over Paris Saint-Germain at the summit of Ligue 1 after coming from behind to defeat Dijon 2-1 at Stade Louis II on Saturday. Cedric Varrault gave the visitors a surprise lead shortly before half-time when he bundled home after keeper Danijel Subasic failed to clear a long-range header. Monaco clicked into gear in the second-half, first through a long-range free kick by Nabil Dirar who drove an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net. Radamel Falcao then nudged Dijon closer to relegation when he also beat keeper Baptiste Reynet with a free kick. Nice confirmed they will finish in at least third place after dispatching Nancy 3-1 at Allianz Riviera -- already guaranteeing their best league performance for 40 years. A 21st win of the campaign keeps up the pressure on the top two of Monaco and PSG with fourth-placed Lyon now unable to catch them. Nancy took advantage of some comically poor defending to seize a 27th-minute lead, the home side's … [Read more...] about Monaco rally to open three-point lead in Ligue 1; Nice seal Champions League
Monaco extended their lead at the top of Ligue 1 as Radamel Falcao's second-half goal secured a 1-0 win at Angers. Falcao was restored to the Monaco starting lineup for the first time since the end of February after a hip injury. And the Colombian came up with the all-important 61st-minute winner -- his 17th goal in Ligue 1 this season -- after mid-table Angers had threatened an upset. Falcao latched onto Nabil Dirar's pass to net the winner and Monaco survived a late scare when Jonathan Bamba's header struck a post six minutes from time. Monaco's victory took them four points clear of second-placed Nice, although Paris Saint-Germain could cut the gap to one on Sunday when they play at home to Guingamp. Fourth-placed Lyon suffered a surprise 4-1 home defeat to Lorient as the bottom three in Ligue 1 all won on a night of shocks. It looked plain sailing for Lyon when Memphis Depay set up Corentin Tolisso to open the scoring after 28 minutes. But Lorient levelled through Majeed Waris' … [Read more...] about Monaco extend lead atop Ligue 1 as bottom three all earn shock wins

No team has impressed more in the pre-Africa Cup of Nations friendlies than Tunisia, who made it three wins out of three with a 2-1 victory over Burundi on Monday evening. The triumph -- against a Hirondelles team that has also caught the eye during the pre-tournament matches -- came after victories over Iraq and Croatia. As had been the case against the World Cup finalists, Tunisia had taken the lead only to be pegged back, with a delicious 76th-minute effort from Cedric Amissi -- after fine interplay on the edge of the Tunisian box -- cancelling out Yassine Taha Khenissi's opener 10 minutes earlier. However, in a repeat of the Croatia scenario, Tunisia rallied, with Naim Sliti netting a 93rd-minute winner after snatching back possession on the edge of the Burundian box, slaloming inside a challenge and hooking a left-footed shot into the far corner. Coach Nabil Maaloul will bring Anice Badri, Wahbi Khazri and Dylan Bronn into his starting line-up for the Carthage Eagles' Nations Cup … [Read more...] about Afcon preparations: Tunisia complete hat-trick of victories
