Bull escapes Northern California rodeo arena, injures bystanders
Five people were injured when a bull escaped an arena during a popular Northern California rodeo Friday night, authorities said Sunday. The bull jumped over a fence and into a crowd of attendees before escaping the rodeo grounds during the final section of the Redding Rodeo’s bull riding event, the Redding Rodeo Association said in a Facebook post . Rodeo livestock professionals captured the bull near the Sundial Bridge — about half a mile from the arena — and immediately placed the animal in a trailer, the association said. “The bull did not buck again at the Redding Rodeo and was taken back to his ranch,” a spokesperson for the association said in a statement Sunday. Emergency personnel and law enforcement officials provided aid to the wounded individuals, the statement said. The bull injured five people, including one wounded near the Sundial Bridge and taken to a hospital for their minor injuries, the association spokesperson said. Another victim was injured near the … [Read more...] about Bull escapes Northern California rodeo arena, injures bystanders
In ‘Holy Spider,’ a Serial Killer Murders Prostitutes in Iran—and the Country Supports Him
A serial killer roams the streets at night, picking off desperate prostituted women, many of whom are hooked on crack, and strangles them to death in his home. A young female journalist, who is (naturally) feisty and emotionally invested in the case, sets about tracking down the murderer, who has become known as the Spider Killer: their destinies seem set on a collision course. That isn’t the synopsis of a moderately successful ‘90s thriller starring Ashley Judd , released in the wake of Se7en , but instead the plot of Holy Spider , by the Danish director of Iranian origin Ali Abbasi ( Border ), which on top of its tense procedural stylings attempts to take the temperature of structural misogyny in Iran. That the film can be termed moderately successful in that ambition is entirely down to a third act, which rescues the film by widening out its scope somewhat, and not at all due to the rather disgusting violence and suspense of its murder mystery. The movie starts … [Read more...] about In ‘Holy Spider,’ a Serial Killer Murders Prostitutes in Iran—and the Country Supports Him
The Bombshell Testimony Looming Over Johnny Depp’s Case
The legal teams for Johnny Depp and Amber Heard have only one more week to prove their respective clients’ former spouses defamed them in what has been an alternately disturbing and surreal civil trial in Virginia . Over the last five weeks, Fairfax County jurors have heard damning allegations of domestic violence and damaged acting careers. Depp, in his $50 million lawsuit, alleged Heard “devastated” his career when she penned a 2018 Washington Post op-ed. In the piece, which did not mention Depp by name but came two years after she sought a restraining order against him, Heard identified herself as a domestic violence survivor. In her own $100 million counter lawsuit, Heard alleges that Depp and his legal team defamed her by launching a “smear” campaign against her, which included calling her allegations an “abuse hoax.” Throughout the trial, both actors have insisted that they were victims of domestic abuse during a relationship that officially dissolved in 2017—and … [Read more...] about The Bombshell Testimony Looming Over Johnny Depp’s Case
The Massive Screwup That Could Let COVID Bypass Our Vaccines
After weeks at a two-year low, COVID cases are on the rise again in some countries. In the United States, there were 100,000 daily new infections, on average–up from 30,000 in mid-March. The trend is intensifying an important debate in epidemiological circles. What’s the best strategy for preventing catastrophic mass death from the worst possible new COVID variants ? New restrictions? New vaccines? New therapies? A mix of the three? Whatever consensus takes shape could guide us into the pandemic’s fourth year. But there’s a catch, of course. Public-health costs money. And in the world’s richest country, the United States, a few right-wing politicians are doing their damndest to make sure no new money is available to speed up development, production and distribution of new vaccines and therapies. Vaccine development is stalling. China is still pushing locally-made vaccines that don’t work very well. The leading Western vaccine-manufacturers are focusing on developing boosters … [Read more...] about The Massive Screwup That Could Let COVID Bypass Our Vaccines
Gov. Hutchinson: If Roe Overturned — Rape, Incest Exceptions to Arkansas Ban Can Be Revisited
Governor Asa Hutchinson (R-AR) said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union” that his state could revisit the lack of exceptions for rape and incest in Arkansas abortion law if the Supreme Court overturned Roe. v Wade. Hutchinson said, “If Roe v. Wade is reversed, the trigger law in Arkansas would come into effect. And whenever I signed that law, I did express that I support also the exceptions of rape and incest. The life of the mother and rape and incest are two exceptions I believe should have been added that did not have the support in the general assembly. And so we have to wait and see what the Supreme Court actually does, but if that Roe versus Wade is reversed, then what we’ve fought for 40 years and returning the authority back to the states will actually happen. You’ll see states making different decisions based upon the values and the consensus of the people of that state. In Arkansas, we actually passed a constitutional amendment supporting the life of the unborn and … [Read more...] about Gov. Welcome to the Fifth COVID Wave
Photo: Spencer Platt/Getty Images A fifth COVID wave, fueled by more-transmissible BA.2.12.1 and BA.2 subvariants of the Omicron strain, is definitely now underway in the United States. CDC data indicates that at least 86 percent of Americans now live in communities where there is a high risk of COVID transmission, up from 72 percent the previous week, and 57 percent the week before that. At least 95 percent of Americans now live in areas where there is substantial risk of transmission; only 1 percent live in communities where there is low risk. But this wave of new infections is also significantly larger than official case counts suggest, since many cases are either being detected using at-home tests that are never reported, or are asymptomatic and/or not being detected at all. As the Washington Post pointed out last week , nobody actually knows how big this new COVID wave actually is right now, noting that COVID experts suspect the number of new cases in communities … [Read more...] about Welcome to the Fifth COVID Wave

A children’s book that reportedly knocks religion and praises Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has been distributed to public school libraries, the New York Post reported Saturday. “ What You Don’t Know: A Story of Liberated Childhood, ” written by and illustrated by Anastasia Higginbotham, which reportedly appears on a fifth-grade independent reading list, revolves around a black, “queer” boy named Demetrius struggling to fit in at school and church. At one point in the story, Demetrius’ spirit is depicted meeting a character that appears to be Jesus , who tells him that everyone is invited to love and be loved, including an unnamed white man on the page that appears to resemble Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell . Higginbotham confirms that the character is indeed Sen. McConnell during a book reading on a YouTube video, the New York Post reported .
