MIAMI (CBSMiami/AP) — Electronic music fans are hoping Ultra returns in 2022 after another year brings another delay. Alex Wu had hoped he could escape a dormant live music scene in Washington, D.C. next month for Ultra Music Festival in Miami, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of the 2020 event. READ MORE: 1 Dead, 2 Wounded In SW Miami-Dade Shooting As the world started to grind to a halt a year ago, the 30-year-old music promoter told the Miami Herald he was disappointed he and his girlfriend wouldn’t get to show off their flashy new outfits at Bayfront Park. He argued with a Miami hotel manager over a refund. He eventually got his money back, and the $200 worth of festival-wear would have to wait at least another year. In January, festival organizers formally asked the city to cancel this year’s festival due to the pandemic. City officials agreed. Over the weekend, to no one’s surprise, Ultra was officially canceled again. Seeing the state of … [Read more...] about Ultra Fans Holding Out Hope Musical Festival Returns In 2022

What Dr. Suess can still teach us
Dr. Seuss Enterprises, a private company, has chosen to respond to consumer desires while seeking to maximize the sales of their products in the long run in a capitalist free market. To this end, it has announced that it will no longer sell six individual children’s books written decades ago by Theodor Seuss Geisel, a.k.a. Dr. Seuss, because of the books’ racist depictions of Asians and Blacks. This decision has engendered fury and cries of “political correctness” from the right — the same people who usually view the unfettered free market as the paragon of individual freedom. As is often the case, a bit of historical reality ought to be injected into this conversation. When I was a young man destined for a career as a physician and medical historian, my mother, an eighth-grade English teacher, presented me with two books from our home. They had been childhood storybooks read in the 1940s by my oldest sister. They were scribbled with my late sister’s crayons. My mother told me … [Read more...] about What Dr. Suess can still teach us
Cambodia Aims to Reduce Dependency on US Dollar
PHNOM PENH, CAMBODIA - The National Bank of Cambodia, the country’s central bank, is aiming to reduce the country’s dependence on the U.S. dollar with the introduction of digital currencies and the phasing out of small-denomination U.S. currency – $1, $2 and $5 bills – in favor of the local currency, the riel. Cambodia has run a dual-currency system since United Nations peacekeepers arrived to oversee elections in 1993, bringing with them U.S. dollars, which circulated in tandem with riel, providing much-needed currency stability amid postwar reconstruction. National Bank of Cambodia Governor Chea Chanto said in September that demand for the riel had increased an average of 16% a year for two decades, with annual economic growth rates of 7.8%, adding that fewer U.S. dollars in circulation would give the central bank greater control over the economy. “I firmly believe all ministries, institutions, companies, enterprises and those who actively participate in the process of … [Read more...] about Cambodia Aims to Reduce Dependency on US Dollar

U.S. gives hope to previously denied asylum seekers in camp
MEXICO CITY — In a camp at the U.S.-Mexico border, some asylum seekers were told by officials that the U.S. government may reopen their cases and they would eventually be able to enter the U.S. to wait out the asylum process. The new opening for people previously denied came as Mexican authorities worked to close the improvised camp along the banks of the Rio Grande, across from Brownsville, Texas, that has housed thousands of asylum seekers over the more than two years it existed. Late Friday night, an official with Mexico’s Foreign Affairs Ministry said via Twitter that the last asylum seekers with active cases from the camp had been processed and the camp was closed. Others with closed asylum cases who were told their cases could be reopened were urged to move to a shelter. But about 50 had still remained in the camp on Saturday until they were finally moved to a shelter and the camp closed later in the day. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security did not respond to requests … [Read more...] about U.S. gives hope to previously denied asylum seekers in camp
