(CNN) Grief over the loss of a parent invariably provokes powerful and complex emotions. For golfer Danielle Kang, there was an added dynamic following the death of her father K.S. -- he had been her caddy and nurtured her passion for the sport . K.S. was there by his daughter's side, reassuring her at the final playoff hole in the 2010 U.S Women's Amateur tournament, saying it was just extra "TV time." He was also there during her defense of that title, making jokes as to whether he should wear the ring handed out to the winner or give it to Kang's mother. Kang had given her father the winner's ring after her 2010 success. So when K.S. died in 2013 from cancer, Kang was devastated. She'd turned professional in 2011, but in the following two years, was unable to win a pro tournament. She somehow felt she'd "failed" her Dad. Kang was also struggling to deal with the reality of what professional sport demands. Kang plays a shot from the fourth hole during … [Read more...] about Grief over her father’s death helped drive golfer Danielle Kang to major success

Ask Amy: Toxic daughter poses danger to family
Dear Amy: My daughter is toxic. She and her husband live with me, but with my help of a hefty down payment they will soon be moving out. I am looking forward to their absence. I am thinking of changing the locks once they leave. My abrasive daughter tends to get angry and then cut out whomever she thinks offended her. The list is long and includes her only brother, my sister, a nephew, my brother, his only daughter, many of my friends and their spouses, many of her own friends, her husband’s family, and all of his old friends. My elderly mother (94) and myself, at least some of the time, get caught in the crossfire, and then she will stop speaking to us for weeks at a time. Recently, however, her angry behavior escalated. She knocked me to the floor. Although I wasn’t injured, I was shocked. I believe she needs therapy to deal with her out-sized anger. I spoke to her about it. Not surprisingly, it turned into an argument. Of course, I was wrong to poke an alligator … [Read more...] about Ask Amy: Toxic daughter poses danger to family
Iraq’s Christians Await Papal Visit With Hope – and Worry
AMMAN - Pope Francis' planned visit to Iraq, from March 5 to March 8, is complex on many levels. COVID-19 cases are rising, as are terrorist incidents in recent weeks. The historic but greatly diminished Christian community, says it needs a boost, however, from the Catholic leader after three-years of devastation carried out by militants of the Islamic State group, and the pontiff also wants to reach out to the Muslim world by meeting with a highly-revered Shi'ite cleric. Pope Francis’ visit to Iraq marks his first foreign trip after a 15-month gap due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and it’s also the first-ever papal visit to this biblical land. For years, the pope expressed his concerns publicly for the plight of Iraq’s Christians and its many religious minorities, including the Yazidis, who both have suffered at the hands of Islamic State militants and sectarian violence. The Reverend Emanuel Youkhana, an Iraqi priest in the Assyrian Church of the East, told VOA that Christians, now … [Read more...] about Iraq’s Christians Await Papal Visit With Hope – and Worry
