The Home Office has reported more than 10,000 suspected cases of modern slavery in the UK last year, though the effects of lockdown mean that the figure could be even higher. The statistics published on Thursday revealed that there were 10,613 potential cases of modern slavery detected in 2020, only slightly lower than in 2019, when 10,616 cases were identified. Home Official officials suspect that the plateau in figures may have been due to fewer opportunities for slavery victims to interact with emergency services or travel due to a year of coronavirus restrictions. Since 2014, the number of National Referral Mechanism (NRM) referrals had been increasing in the hundreds, from 2,337 in 2014, until 2017 when there was a larger increase to 5,135. There was a further jump the following year to 6,982 and then a sharp increase in 2019 where the figure hit the 10,000 mark. Home Office Nearly two-thirds (63 per cent) of alleged victims said that the slavery took place … [Read more...] about More than 10,000 Suspected Modern Slavery Victims in UK Last Year

Conservative MP Calls for Report Linking Historic Sites to Slavery to Be ‘Shredded’
A leading Conservative MP has said that a report by Historic England tying historical sites to slavery should be “shredded”. “I first thought it should be shelved, I now think it should be shredded,” said Sir John Hayes, who leads the ‘Common Sense’ faction of Conservative MPs, which was “formed to speak for the silent majority of voters tired of being patronised by elitist bourgeois liberals whenever issues such as immigration or law and order are raised” and is a major voice for social conservatism and lockdown scepticism within Boris Johnson’s party, which is increasingly focused on liberal elite issue like climate change and the green agenda . “It has no use whatsoever and it’s indicative of an organisation that needs to be brought to order,” said Sir John of the publicly-funded organisation. “Of course slavery was awful and of course it was right we abolished it , but I am not sure we need to go through this kind of comprehensive report linking … [Read more...] about Conservative MP Calls for Report Linking Historic Sites to Slavery to Be ‘Shredded’
GOP Rep. Gimenez on Border Crisis: ‘Basically, It’s Modern-Day Slavery’
Sunday on Fox News Channel’s “The Next Revolution,” Rep. Carlos Gimenez (R-FL) discussed his recent visit to see firsthand the crisis at United States’ border with Mexico. Gimenez described the situation at the border as “modern-day slavery.” He added the border crisis is seeing the molestation of young females, indentured servitude until families can come up with the funds for being transported across the border, and the murdering of immigrants who cannot come up with the funds. “Look, what I saw at that Customs and Border Protection facility hundreds and hundreds of children, boys and girls — and I’m talking boys and girls — I’m not talking 17, 16 — I’m really talking boys and girls — I’m talking five, six, seven — they come across the border by themselves,” Gimenez recalled. “They have little pieces of paper telling them call so-and-so and an address. But here is the thing — a lot of these girls, young girls, are being molested. Maybe up to 30% are being molested. It costs … [Read more...] about GOP Rep. Watch – Chuck Schumer: State Voting Laws ‘One of the Greatest Threats We Have to Modern Democracy in America’
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) likened basic election integrity measures embraced by several states, such as voter ID, to the era of Jim Crow and accused the GOP of attempting to suppress voters. He made the remarks during Wednesday’s Senate Rules and Administration Committee hearing on S 1, or the “For the People Act,” which critics warn will strip power from the states and federalize U.S. elections. Speaking to his colleagues during the hearing, Schumer blasted Republican state legislatures, such as Georgia’s, for pursuing basic election integrity measures, calling it “infuriating” and accusing Republicans of being “afraid” of democracy and trying to prevent people from voting. “Some of these voter suppression laws in Georgia and other Republican states smack of Jim Crow rearing its ugly head once again. It is 160 years since the 13, 14, and 15th amendments abolished slavery, and Jim Crow stills seems to be with us,” the New York progressive said. “The laws, … [Read more...] about Watch – Chuck Schumer: State Voting Laws ‘One of the Greatest Threats We Have to Modern Democracy in America’
