A federal judge on Tuesday ordered Exxon Mobil to pay a $14.25 million civil penalty as part of a decade-long lawsuit. As ABC News reports , the ruling from U.S. District Judge David Hittner lowers the amount of the award from a previous ruling in 2017 that had it at $20 million. Hittner’s 2017 ruling was overturned in July. The 11-year-old lawsuit filed by advocacy group Environment Texas alleges that Exxon Mobil violated the Clean Air Act for years at its refinery in Baytown, Texas. ADVERTISEMENT Hittner found in his new opinion that Environment Texas, the Sierra Club and the National Environmental Law Center had proven thousands of instances of illegal flaring and unauthorized releases of pollutants. Denver Public Library to reopen nine branches to visitors after year-long COVID-19 closure
The Denver Public Library plans to reopen nine branches on Tuesday, March 9, after shuttering its brick-and-mortar locations about a year ago as part of COVID-19 safety concerns. The nine branches reopening are: Bear Valley Branch Library, Ross-Cherry Creek Branch Library, Rodolfo “Corky” Gonzales Branch Library, Green Valley Ranch Branch Library, Hampden Branch Library, Sam Gary Branch Library, Ross-University Hills Branch Library, Valdez-Perry Branch Library, and Westwood Branch Library. The reopening branches, except the Westwood Branch Library, will serve the public in person from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, according to a DPL news release. The Westwood Branch Library will operate from 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. Normal curbside service hours will continue at these locations, the release said. You can do a lot with an extra $2,000 in your pocket, and that’s about how much Denver drivers are squandering per year on excess wear, tear and wasted traffic hours in their vehicles. According to a recent study by Washington, D.C.-based national nonprofit transportation research group The Road Information Program , crumbling infrastructure is hurting motorists’ wallets. The 50-year-old group published its “ Keeping Colorado Mobile Report ” on Tuesday. It describes that the average Denverite is losing $1,242 as a result of spending 62 hours stuck in traffic, which wastes an additional 26 gallons of fuel annually. Analysts found 22% of Colorado’s roads are in poor condition, and 25% are rated as mediocre. In Denver, 37% of major local and state roads are in poor condition and another 26% are in mediocre shape. J.J. Watt has agreed to a two-year contract with the Arizona Cardinals. The team announced the deal with the free-agent edge rusher on Monday. Watt was released last month by the Houston Texans, for whom he won three NFL Defensive Player of the Year awards. A person familiar with the contract told The Associated Press that the total package is worth $31 million. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team did not reveal any terms. A five-time All-Pro, Watt — who turns 32 in three weeks — has been one of the NFL’s best players for a decade, but asked out in Houston, which is undergoing a roster upheaval .
