(WPRI) -- Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) will be bowling to raise awareness before the holidays.MADD Rhode Island's Strike Out Drunk Driving bowling tournament will be held Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the East Providence Lanes on Newport Avenue, in the Rumford area of East Providence.The event coincides with MADD's Red Ribbon Campaign, which continues to support ongoing efforts to serve victims' families and educate young people on the dangers of drunk driving.Trophies and other prizes will be awarded, including for the winning bowling team and the most spirited team.Miss Rhode Island Allie Coppa and Miss Rhode Island Outstanding Teen Macie Johnson will be at the event to take photos and sign autographs.There is a registration fee of $30.00 and $15.00 for kids under 12.If you would like to register, click here. … [Read more...] about Madd Rhode Island: Strike Out Drunk Driving

When a 4-year-old New York City boy lost his beloved stuffed toy, Roger the cheetah, from the car window as his family was traveling through Rhode Island, he was heartbroken. So, with the help of his parents, Will Ketcher of Brooklyn wrote police in the Ocean State asking if they could look for the toy. The letter began: “Dear Rhode Island State Highway Patrol, I lost my Roger … can you please find him? … I love him” “Roger is a cheetah,” the note continued. “He fell out of the car window on Interstate 95 South. … He is about 12 inches long. Dozens of Rhode Island schools exempted from 180-day rule
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Students from 25 schools won't have to make up some of the days they missed this school year.The Rhode Island Department of Education confirmed 25 schools across the state have been exempted from the rule requiring 180 days of classes due to circumstances like power outages or broken water lines.RIDE's Megan Geoghegan said, as a rule, if an entire district is closed on a particular day – such as a typical snow day – there will be no waiver granted. She said the waivers are usually for closures of particular buildings - like when the Toll Gate complex in Warwick was without power following a storm last fall.Two requests for waivers were denied and another 14 are pending, Geoghegan said. (AP) — The nearly 60-foot long blue termite that overlooks Interstate 95 in Rhode Island is now even harder to miss.Big Blue Bug Solutions put up a billboard in Providence on Tuesday alerting drivers that their building and its ‘‘World Famous Big Blue Bug’’ are only a mile away.Company vice president Tony DeJesus tells WJAR-TV that they get visitors from all over the world looking for the bug known as Nibbles Woodaway.
