Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has issued a grim warning as intense fighting surrounded Europe’s biggest nuclear power plant over the weekend, fueling fears Russia’s invasion could plunge the world into a nuclear disaster. Located in the Ukrainian city of Enerhodar along the Dnipro river, which is now Russian–occupied, the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is standing perilously close to the frontlines of battle between the two warring countries. On Friday, Russians shelled the power plant twice, damaging critical infrastructure and radiation sensors. The attacks continued throughout the weekend. The nuclear power company Energoatom said in a Telegram post on Friday the attacks came within hours of each other, with the second attack using rocket-propelled grenades that struck Zaporizhzhia “near one of the power units where the nuclear reactor is located,” the company said. “There are risks of hydrogen leakage and sputtering of radioactive substances. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — The U.S. deputy secretary of state said Monday the prime minister of the Solomon Islands “missed an important opportunity” by failing to attend a memorial service to mark the anniversary of a key World War II battle, amid concerns the South Pacific island nation is building closer ties with China. Wendy Sherman and U.S. Ambassador to Australia Caroline Kennedy were among dignitaries who attended a dawn service near the capital Honiara on Sunday to commemorate the Battle of Guadalcanal. Sherman’s father, Marine Mal Sherman, and Kennedy’s father, the late President John F. Kennedy, almost died in fighting on the Solomons. Kennedy had been the commander of a patrol torpedo boat that was rammed and sunk by a Japanese destroyer. Sherman was wounded during the Guadalcanal campaign, which was the Japanese army’s first defeat of WWII. Local … [Read more...] about US official says Solomon Islands leader ‘missed opportunity’
The Biden Age Is Hitting Its Stride
Photo: Sarah Silbiger/Getty Images Last week, Democratic Representative Carolyn Maloney of the Upper East Side, chair of the powerful House Committee on Oversight and Reform, made national headlines by telling me, in the middle of a high-stakes televised debate , that she thinks Joe Biden will voluntarily be a one-term president. “I don’t believe he is running for reelection,” she said in response to my yes/no question about whether Biden ought to be a candidate in 2024. The remark drew a double take from attorney Siraj Patel, one of her fellow debaters, but it wasn’t a gaffe: When asked on CNN to clarify the remark the next morning, Maloney quasi apologized and pledged her support for the president, but reemphasized that she doesn’t believe Biden will be a candidate. Maloney’s remarks fly in the face of emphatic White House statements. “To be clear, as the president has said repeatedly, he plans to run in 2024,” press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre tweeted in June. … [Read more...] about The Biden Age Is Hitting Its Stride

Officials Blast Amnesty International Report Accusing Ukraine of Endangering Civilians
A report from Amnesty International published Thursday claims that Ukrainian forces are putting civilians at risk by setting up bases in residential neighborhoods, even as authorities continue to deride Russian forces for committing atrocities against Ukrainians. “Ukrainian forces have put civilians in harm’s way by establishing bases and operating weapons systems in populated residential areas, including in schools and hospitals, as they repelled the Russian invasion that began in February,” Amnesty International said in a statement. “Such tactics violate international humanitarian law and endanger civilians, as they turn civilian objects into military targets.” Russian strikes have hit civilians in populous areas where Ukraine has set up bases, Amnesty said. Ukraine’s tactics have put civilians in harm’s way in 19 towns, in part because they launched strikes from residential areas and based themselves in civilian buildings in the Kharkiv, Donbas, and Mykolaiv regions, … [Read more...] about Officials Blast Amnesty International Report Accusing Ukraine of Endangering Civilians
Two prominent men died on Titanic – were they secretly a couple?
Let's be clear up front: No one knows for sure whether Archibald Butt and Francis Davis Millet were in a romantic relationship. In the times and society in which they lived, for such a thing to become known would have meant ruin. Here's what we do know. Butt never married. Millet was estranged from his wife and had a previous relationship with a man. Butt and Millet lived together in a mansion in Washington's tony Georgetown neighborhood, where they threw parties for the city's elite - including Butt's boss, President William Howard Taft. And in the weeks before they died on the Titanic, they were vacationing together in Europe. "The enduring partnership of Butt and Millet was an early case of 'Don't ask, don't tell,' " historian Richard Davenport-Hines wrote in 2012, referring to the policy that once required gay members of the military to keep their sexuality secret. A National Park Service page for the White House memorial fountain in their honor says they were "widely … [Read more...] about Two prominent men died on Titanic – were they secretly a couple?
