SALT LAKE CITY — For years, Sen. Orrin Hatch has moonlighted as a songwriter, even penning a tune that found its way into a Hollywood movie soundtrack. Beach Boys singer Mike Love has detailed the band’s brief relationship with cult leader Charles Manson in the late 1960s in a new memoir. California governor denies parole for Manson cult follower People magazine reports Love writes that Manson and his followers moved in with bandmate Dennis Wilson in 1968, a little more than a year before Manson’s cult killed seven people, including actress Sharon Tate. Love recalls being at the house with another Beach Boy, Bruce Johnston, when Manson handed out LSD and was “orchestrating sex partners” for some of his female followers. Fifty years ago, the Beach Boys rode “Good Vibrations” to number one. Lead singer Mike Love said he actually wrote the lyrics driving to the recording studio with his then-wife. “I said, ‘Take this down -- I’m driving along, I love the colorful clothes she wears, and the way the sunlight plays upon her hair,’” Love said. “Good Vibrations” is now the title of Love’s new autobiography, but the group known for its harmonies has a history of discord. “When did you interest in singing start?” CBS News correspondent Anthony Mason asked him in a recent interview. “Well, since I sang together with my cousin Brian when we were little kids,” Love said.
