The Nuggets played their 10th consecutive game without second-leading scorer Gary Harris Thursday against Minnesota, a three-week absence that coach Michael Malone acknowledged has been “longer than, I think, anybody anticipated.” Malone said there’s a slight chance Harris could be ready to play Saturday afternoon at the Clippers, but that returning Monday against Portland is probably the “best-case scenario.” Denver entered Thursday with a 6-4 record without Harris but on a three-game winning streak. When asked about how his team has learned how to adjust without Harris over the past three weeks, Malone pointed to the consistency of Will Barton (two consecutive double-doubles entering Thursday) and the growing comfort of Paul Millsap (22.4 points, 8.4 rebounds, 3.2 assists over previous five games) to complement the “unbelievably elite” play of Nikola Jokic (26.2 points, 11.6 rebounds, six assists over the previous five games). “The … [Read more...] about Denver Nuggets briefs: Gary Harris’ 10-game absence has been “longer than, I think, anybody anticipated,” Michael Malone says
0 View Gallery View Comments DENVER — The irony in all of this is how the Nuggets are suddenly winning. They’re winning the same way George Karl was winning, by running teams out of the gym on 'O' and saying a sweet little prayer on 'D.' Funny how that works. Since big-money forward Paul Millsap returned from injury and to the starting lineup a month ago, the high-flying, highly frustrating Nuggets own the best offensive rating in the NBA. Seriously, I looked it up. The Internet doesn’t lie, right? So if the Nuggets miss the playoffs and you want to fire Michael Malone, that’s cool. But do you really want to go down that road without a map again, breaking up a winning program to throw an unknown against the wall and see if it sticks? I don't. The post-Karl Nuggets weren't fun at all. They were a mess. It is legal in Colorado to smoke marijuana. But it’s strictly forbidden to applaud Nuggets coach Michael Malone. The Nuggets beat Indiana 107-104 Tuesday, and their improbable playoff dream is alive. In the final week of the regular season, there’s no pressure on Denver. This is fun. “We can’t play like it’s life and death, because we’re going to die a lot,” Malone said. “The way we play, how free we play, we’re going to turn the ball over at times, we’re young. I want our guys to play free, to enjoy and embrace the moment and what we’re involved in right now. I think a lot of other teams are playing tight. … Not us.” That’s a coach of a team with no playoff pedigree, striking the perfect tone, in the spirit of Nuggets legend Doug Moe and his lovable no-hopers. If I stand up and give kudos to Malone, will I get arrested? Way back in November when forward Paul Millsap underwent wrist surgery that would … [Read more...] about Kiszla: Fire Nuggets coach Michael Malone? What, are you high? OKLAHOMA CITY — The injury prognosis for Nuggets’ second-leading scorer Gary Harris took a downturn Friday, as coach Michael Malone said before Denver’s game against the Thunder that he did not “foresee (Harris) playing for another week, at least” because of a right knee injury that has kept him out for the past seven games. “Unfortunately, I don’t think we’re gonna see him for a while,” Malone said. “Just being completely honest. Obviously, I’m not a doctor, but in talking to our training staff, Gary has been working hard to get back, but I think he is still a ways away. “It’s obviously unfortunate, because Gary is such an integral part of our team on both ends and what we’re trying to do. You couldn’t pick a worse time of the year for Gary Harris to be out, which is unfortunate, because it’s killing him not to be out there.” Harris’ late-season injury has put a dent in the … [Read more...] about Denver Nuggets’ Gary Harris could be out “for another week, at least” with knee injury, coach Michael Malone says
