Renowned Mexican writer Sergio Pitol dies at 85
MEXICO CITY (AP) — Sergio Pitol, a celebrated Mexican author, essayist and translator and winner of the most prestigious award for literature in the Spanish-speaking world, died Thursday. He was 85.Pitol died of natural causes at his home in Xalapa, Veracruz state, said family members and Alberto Salamanca, a spokesman for the Mexican government's Department of Culture.Born March 18, 1933, in the city of Puebla, Pitol was known for such works as "Mephisto's Waltz" and his "Trilogy of Memory," which included "The Art of Flight," ''The Journey" and "The Magician of Vienna."He won Spanish literature's prestigious Cervantes Prize in 2005. Mexican men found with meth in car at Nogales border entry
Federal officers say they have arrested two Mexican nationals on suspicion of smuggling nearly 74 pounds of methamphetamine.U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers say a male driver and his male passenger, both age 19, were flagged for further inspection Tuesday at the Port of Nogales.A drug-sniffing canine inspected their Oldsmobile sedan and alerted officers to an odor.Officers found meth estimated to be worth $221,000 in the vehicle's seats and quarter panels.Officers seized the drugs and turned over the two men to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.Authorities did not release the suspects' identities. … [Read more...] about Mexican men found with meth in car at Nogales border entry
Arizona border agent’s first shot killed Mexican teen, pathologist testifies
Jose Antonio Elena Rodriguez was killed by one of the first shots fired by Border Patrol agent Lonnie Swartz, the defense’s forensic pathologist testified at his murder trial Wednesday, contrary to the conclusion of the government’s expert witness.“I determined the first shot was the fatal shot to the head, which fits one of the earlier conclusions from the Mexican pathologist,” Dr. Cyril Wecht told jurors. The forensic pathologist has been practicing for more than 50 years and has consulted in some high-profile cases, including the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.Swartz fired 16 shots from the U.S. side of the border into Nogales, Sonora, on Oct. 10, 2012, hitting Elena Rodriguez 10 times in the head and back.The government charged Swartz with second-degree murder and has said the fact he continued to shoot Elena Rodríguez after he was on the ground showed the agent acted deliberately or recklessly with disregard for human life.
