POLITICS 01/13/2019 03:03 am ET Two children of immigrants have vastly different points of view. By Amy Russo President Donald Trump and Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) are known for their political sparring matches, but they have more in common than you might think. In an op-ed published Saturday, New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd pointed out that both were raised by fathers of similar backgrounds ― immigrants who would one day rise to prominence with fierce personalities and children at their feet who would follow in their footsteps. However, Dowd pointed out, that’s where the commonalities stopped. In an exploration of the upbringings of both, Dowd noted that the parenting style of real estate mogul Fred Trump differed vastly from that of Thomas D’Alesandro Jr., a.k.a. Big Tommy, who served as a Maryland congressman and later the mayor of Baltimore. “Big Tommy D’Alesandro Jr. taught little Nancy how to count,” Dowd wrote. … [Read more...] about NYT’s Maureen Dowd Sees Big Similarities Between Trump And Pelosi, Except For This

WASHINGTON — When I was in Reykjavik in August, Icelanders were bragging about putting the corrupt bankers who ravaged their economy in prison. In America, it works somewhat differently. We let the corrupt bankers who ravaged our economy roam free with bigger bonuses, more lavish Hamptons houses and fresh risky schemes. The big banks are bigger than ever and prosecution of white-collar crimes is at a 20-year low. And, cherry on the gilded cake, we put white-collar criminals in charge of the country — elevating epic grifters to the presidency and powerful Cabinet posts.Reading all the recent stories about the 10th anniversary of the financial crisis, it’s easy to see the neon line leading from President Barack Obama’s failure to punish Wall Street scammers to the fact that Republican scammers are now infecting the entire infrastructure of government.“The Tea Party and Occupy Wall Street rose up as opposite expressions of anti-establishment rage, nourished by … [Read more...] about Maureen Dowd: Too rich to jail

Analysis Donald Trump When President-elect Donald Trump took the stage at the New York Hilton Midtown on election night, trailed by a gaggle of younger, photogenic women, he had just wiped the floor with another woman, Hillary Clinton, who until a few hours earlier had expected (as did most of the world) she would be the first female president of the United States. American women were left not with a second-wave role model headed for the White House, but with a clan of camp followers engaged in the sort of transactional relationship many feminists hoped had gone the way of the corset. They were as Trump-branded as the buildings bearing his name across the city of New York. Looking at his third wife, Melania, and daughters Ivanka and Tiffany—gleaming, towering replicas of one another—many in America were asking themselves the same question: Could their support for Trump—a man caught on tape belittling and objectifying women only months before—be genuine? Ivanka, … [Read more...] about Melania and Ivanka Trump Accepted Humiliation and Agreed to Become Donald Trump’s Brand Extensions
By Martha Ross | [email protected] | Bay Area News Group PUBLISHED: June 27, 2018 at 8:08 am | UPDATED: June 28, 2018 at 4:06 am First lady Melania Trump announced that she’s returning to Texas to visit another immigration detention facility — a week after she donned a controversial jacket that raised questions about whether she really cares about the plight of migrant children separated from their parents. “Yes, Mrs. Trump plans to visit additional facilities sometime this week,” her spokeswoman, Stephanie Grisham, told CNN Tuesday. The first lady “wants to continue to check on children,” Grisham said. “The first lady is moved by what she is hearing, and what she saw in Texas, and she wants to again see and listen for herself what is happening in these places.” Details about when and where the self-styled “Be Best” children’s advocate will go were sketchy as of Wednesday morning, but it’s likely … [Read more...] about Did Melania Trump’s jacket fiasco kill her credibility for a second border visit?
