August 12, 2022 by www.breitbart.com Leave a Comment

ROME — Pope Francis met a group of transsexuals in the Vatican this week, the fourth such encounter just in 2022, the Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano reports. “The pope’s attention to people who live this fragility with great suffering is opening up unimaginable hopes,” said Sister Geneviève Jeanningros and Father Andrea Conocchia, a priest and religious sister that offer pastoral care for the group. According to L’Osservatore Romano , the nun and the parish priest summarize the meeting, which took place after the pontiff’s weekly general audience Wednesday, as “revolution and hope,” words that express the meaning of the encounter for its participants. “If this is not a revolution, what is?!” said Father Conocchia. “The pope who grants an audience to transsexuals, addressing them with love, paternity, and simplicity is not a foregone conclusion.” “The Gospel relaunches us, tells us to welcome everyone, especially those who are most in need and who are … [Read more...] about Pope Francis Meets with Group of Transsexuals at the Vatican

Listen: Lauren Boebert’s neighbors’ 911 calls describe threats, husband running over mailbox

August 12, 2022 by www.denverpost.com Leave a Comment

Garfield County Sheriff’s deputies decided to let neighbors of U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert settle a dispute between themselves and the congresswoman’s husband after he reportedly threatened them and destroyed their mailbox. But 911 calls from the incident, obtained by The Denver Post, show just how upset and nervous the neighbors were over their run-in with Boebert’s husband, Jayson Boebert. The calls also provide additional context into what the neighbors, in Silt, said amounted to excessive speeding, property damage, possible drunken driving and threats made from a man whose family openly and regularly carries flaunts their firearms. “I’m sure he’s loaded to the hilt. Do you know who his wife is? Lauren Boebert. She’s loaded. They all have guns,” one neighbor told a 911 dispatcher. “He just got chest to chest, face to face, looking to fight.” That additional context from the calls appears to match the limited information available in reports from Garfield County deputies. … [Read more...] about Listen: Lauren Boebert’s neighbors’ 911 calls describe threats, husband running over mailbox

As more details emerge about the criminal history of Muhammad Syed , 51, charged in the murders of two Muslim men in Albuquerque , and a prime suspect in the killing of two more, the family of one of the victims blames police for not intervening sooner. Sharief Ahmadi Hadi, the brother of murder victim Mohammad “Zahir” Ahmadi, says that prime suspect, Muhammad Syed, regularly harassed his family and slashed the tires of his wife’s car in the years prior to his brother’s murder. Hadi says he believes Syed targeted his family because they are Shiite Muslims. Hadi’s brother, Muhammad Zahir Ahmadi, 62, was the first victim in a string of recent murders that have rocked the Muslim community of Albuquerque. Ahmadi was found gunned down in the rear parking lot of the market he ran with his brother on Nov. 7, 2021. Syed has not been charged with his murder but police say he is their main suspect. Hadi, who owns a Halal grocery store and cafe on San Mateo Boulevard in Albuquerque, … [Read more...] about How Domestic Violence Spilled Over Into Albuquerque Terror

Latvia, Estonia leave China-backed East Europe forum

August 12, 2022 by www.chron.com Leave a Comment

BEIJING (AP) — Latvia and Estonia say they have left a Chinese-backed forum aimed at boosting relations with Eastern European countries, in what appears to be a new setback for China's increasingly assertive diplomacy. The move follows China’s boosting of its relations with Russia, whose invasion of Ukraine is seen as a possible first step in a series of moves against countries that were once part of the Soviet Union. China has refused to criticize Russia and has condemned punishing economic sanctions imposed on Moscow by the West. Weeks before the invasion, Chinese President and Communist Party leader Xi Jinping hosted Russian President Vladimir Putin in Beijing and declared their bilateral relations had “no limits" in a joint statement. The move also comes after Beijing launched economic and diplomatic retaliation against another Baltic state, Lithuania, in retaliation for its expanded ties with the self-governing island democracy of Taiwan, which China claims as its own … [Read more...] about Latvia, Estonia leave China-backed East Europe forum

What if the ancient Greeks and Romans actually had terrible taste?

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 8 NEW YORK - Even when you know what to expect, the results are disconcerting: 17 richly painted reproductions of ancient sculpture interspersed among Greek and Roman originals, creating a riot of color amid the more subtle hues of marble and bronze. The colorized works are part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art exhibition "Chroma: Ancient Sculpture in Color," displaying reconstructions of what ancient sculpture may have looked like, based on scientific analysis of pigment fragments from many surviving antiquities. Scholars have long known that the ancients painted and gilded their statues and embedded metals, precious stones and other materials to make them seem more lifelike. But the belief that ancient sculpture was monochrome - white as marble or uniformly patinated bronze - remains more durable and persistent than the scholarship. In its new … [Read more...] about What if the ancient Greeks and Romans actually had terrible taste?

A better way for Baltimore to help its squeegee kids

August 12, 2022 by www.chron.com Leave a Comment

Does Baltimore care about squeegee kids? That's the most important question after a driver attacked one of them and was shot dead in return last month. Everyone in cities like Baltimore knows these kids, who live in terrible poverty and stand at stoplights and street corners and wipe the windshields of passing cars. Sadly, in the wake of this tragedy, the risk is that Baltimore will double down on failed approaches that trap squeegee kids in poverty instead of helping them escape it. This heartbreaking incident has generally divided people along two lines. The first is the most obvious: Crack down on these kids - or even lock 'em up. According to this common response, squeegeeing is illegal for a reason. It's annoying and dangerous, especially during rush hour when traffic is thick and tensions are high. The thinking goes that the police should intervene and get squeegee kids off the streets for good. But is arresting and even imprisoning these kids going to solve anything? This … [Read more...] about A better way for Baltimore to help its squeegee kids

Newsom signs nation’s most sweeping law to phase out single-use plastics and packaging waste

June 30, 2022 by www.latimes.com Leave a Comment

SACRAMENTO — Striking a blow against a pernicious form of pollution, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed into law Thursday the nation’s most far-reaching restrictions on single-use plastics and packaging. The legislation heads off a November ballot measure that many lawmakers and the plastics industry hoped to avoid, and it puts California at the forefront of national efforts to eliminate polystyrene and other plastics that litter the environment, degrade into toxic particles and increasingly inhabit human blood, tissue and organs. Sen. Ben Allen (D-Santa Monica) had tried for years to get state legislators to tackle the growing plastic pollution crisis but has faced opposition from the plastics industry, some food container manufacturers and environmentalists who believe the law doesn’t go far enough. “Relief,” was how he described his emotional state after the legislation was signed. “It’s been a long journey.” The California Senate approved the bill Thursday morning with 29 ayes … [Read more...] about Newsom signs nation’s most sweeping law to phase out single-use plastics and packaging waste
