Michael R. Bloomberg is flirting once again with a run for president, but all signs point to a steep challenge for the billionaire and former New York City mayor if he makes a late entry into the race for the Democratic nomination. At a time when some Democrats are yearning for a new generation of leaders, Bloomberg, 77, would be among the oldest contenders, wedged between Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, 78, and former Vice President Joe Biden, 76.Bloomberg is a former Wall Street investment banker who would be joining the race when a top concern for many Democrats is growing wealth and income inequality. His 12-year mayoral record could also make him unpopular among some of the party’s core constituencies, especially African Americans turned off by his support of police “stop and frisk” tactics. A federal judge struck down the policy in a 2013 ruling that found the city was violating the constitutional rights of minorities. First person in your family to go to college? Here’s some advice from first-generation Colorado students and experts
As the first person in her family to attend college, 18-year-old Sharai Conde had to work that much harder to figure out how to get a secondary degree. Without having help or advice from home when it came to filling out financial aid forms, scholarship applications and registering for classes, Conde relied on her own determination, the kindness of others and resources available for students like her as she embarked on her freshman year at Metropolitan State University of Denver this week. “I feel like a scared Chihuahua,” Conde said Monday at the downtown Auraria campus, which Metro State shares with two other schools. “But I also feel really good,” she added. “When I was getting ready for my first college class, my mom had tears in her eyes. I don’t think she ever thought I’d get this far.”Research tracking a cohort of high school sophomores from 2002 found that 46% of students who had a parent with a bachelor’s degree and 59% with … [Read more...] about First person in your family to go to college? Add North Korea’s human rights abuses to agenda for truly momentous meeting
The announcement at the White House by South Korea’s national security adviser that President Donald Trump will meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un by May this year is not one of the most significant breakthroughs in international relations. It also would be extremely premature to engage in self-congratulation at the apparent capitulation of Kim to Trump’s tough talk.ADVERTISEMENTSo, why is this much ado about nothing? First, President TrumpDonald John TrumpLawmakers prep ahead of impeachment hearing Democrats gear up for high-stakes Judiciary hearing Warren says she made almost M from legal work over past three decades MORE previously conditioned talks with Kim Jong-Un upon the … [Read more...] about Add North Korea’s human rights abuses to agenda for truly momentous meeting
