PARIS - For Sherpa, a scrappy French monitoring group that is thinly staffed, no multinational is too powerful, and no head of state untouchable as it seeks economic and social change through the courts. It accuses a major bank of complicity in Rwanda's genocide and a cement manufacturer of helping to finance terrorism in Syria. It has gone after African leaders, mining companies and even a supermarket chain for activities that allegedly impoverish communities and violate human rights. "I think we are the demonstration that small is beautiful," Sherpa's founder, lawyer William Bourdon, said in his Paris office. Sherpa teamed up with fellow anti-corruption group Transparency International France to score a major win in late October, when a French court handed a suspended prison sentence to Equatorial Guinea's vice president, Teodorin Obiang. The playboy son of the country's longtime leader, Teodoro Obiang Nguema, the younger Obiang was found guilty of using public funds to pay … [Read more...] about Equatorial Guinea Trial Casts Spotlight on Scrappy French Watchdog

National Governors Group Avoids ‘Radioactive’ Common Core
The National Governors Association (NGA) owns the copyright – along with the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) – to the Common Core State Standards. When the nationalized standards are mentioned these days, however, many governors would rather change the subject. In fact, the NGA, holding summer meetings in Nashville, had not even placed the controversial standards on its official agenda, a sign, as the Wall Street Journal states, “the bipartisan idea has become a political minefield.” Much to the surprise of many Washington, D.C., pundits, the standards, and even the name itself, “Common Core,” have “become, in a sense, radioactive,” said Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad (R), according to the Associated Press. Denver suburb passes resolution shielding officers from key portion of Colorado’s new police reform law
Just weeks after Colorado passed a sweeping police reform law , Greenwood Village has approved a measure that ensures its officers aren’t on the hook financially if they mistreat or harm a citizen. Greenwood Village council members unanimously passed a resolution Monday saying the city will never find its officers have acted in bad faith. That effectively shields them from having to face personal financial liability for misconduct on the job — contrary to a key stipulation of Senate Bill 217, which became law last month . “The intent of Council’s resolution was simply to inform its officers that as their employer, they would not make such a (bad-faith) finding no matter what,” Greenwood Village city attorney Tonya Haas Davidson wrote in an email Wednesday. “Nowhere in the law is an employer ever required to make a finding of bad faith.” Lawmakers who helped write the police reform bill were taken aback by Greenwood Village’s move. Sen. Bob Gardner, a Colorado Springs … [Read more...] about Denver suburb passes resolution shielding officers from key portion of Colorado’s new police reform law
