Roehampton, London (CNN) It's unmistakably a scene from the British summer: across a stretch of green, well-kept courts, tennis players shoot balls over the net as spectators -- some seated, some sprawled on grass banks -- watch on in the lazy afternoon heat. This is Wimbledon -- the third grand slam tournament of the calendar year -- but the venue and the competitors are not quite as most know it. At this tennis club, the crowds are smaller, the cheers quieter, and the courts packed closer together than at the All England Club three miles away. While the Wimbledon main draw may not get underway until next week, for more than 250 players the journey to get there has already begun. The four-day qualification tournament in the London district of Roehampton can be a golden ticket for the Wimbledon main stage -- a place at which some players have dreamed of competing their whole careers. "I haven't actually been to the main set at Wimbledon since my … [Read more...] about A short distance from Wimbledon, players struggle and strive to qualify for the main draw

From under to on the rocks: Invasive crabs become whiskey
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — Care for a hint of crab in your whiskey? A New Hampshire distillery has come up with its newest concoction called “Crab Trapper" — whiskey flavored with invasive green crabs. Tamworth Distilling, a maker of craft spirits, is not afraid of pushing boundaries with unexpected flavors. In the past, the distillery produced a whiskey with the secretion from beavers' castor sacs. Last year, it was turkey over the holidays and before that the notoriously pungent smell of durian. The company said the body of this peculiar brew has hints of maple, vanilla oak, clove, cinnamon and allspice. And no, you won't get any crab legs in the drink. WHY DID THE COMPANY CHOOSE GREEN CRABS? Searching for a fresh flavor, Tamworth Distilling cast its eye to the sea. Distiller Matt Power said the company heard about the problems caused by the invasive green crabs from the … [Read more...] about From under to on the rocks: Invasive crabs become whiskey
Anthony Williams’ GOP Senate Campaign Pushes To ‘Make America Healthy’
5 Politics & Government KONKOL COLUMN: The level-headed pastor's message of civility is the only reason to pay attention to the Republican primary for U.S. Senate. Mark Konkol , Patch Staff Posted | Updated Replies CHICAGO — There hasn't been a spotlight focused on who might survive the seven-way Republican primary for U.S. Senate from Illinois that insiders believe only allows the "winner" to get clobbered by incumbent Democrat Tammy Duckworth in November. Voters aren't paying much attention, either. A recent poll found 66 percent of expected Republican voters were still undecided in early June. For me, there's only one reason to care: the candidacy of the Rev. Anthony Williams. Williams is running on one issue: Making America healthy. "That means addressing civilian violence as a public health crisis, pushing our nation to the center and remaining calm, cool and steady," he said Wednesday. Williams' … [Read more...] about Anthony Williams’ GOP Senate Campaign Pushes To ‘Make America Healthy’
Billie Joe Armstrong Threatens To Renounce His US Citizenship Over Roe V. Wade Reversal
(CNN) — Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has told fans at a concert that he intends to renounce his United States citizenship following the US Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade — a controversial move that eliminates the federal constitutional right to abortion nationwide. During a performance as part of the band’s Hella Mega tour at the London Stadium in the UK on Friday, Armstrong expressed his frustration as he told the crowd: “F**k America. I’m f***king renouncing my citizenship. I’m f**king coming here.” READ MORE: Some US Companies Will Cover Travel Costs For Employees Who Need An Abortion He went on to say there’s “too much f**king stupid in the world to go back to that miserable f**king excuse for a country,” before urging fans to be prepared, saying: “You’re going to get a lot more of me in the coming days.” Armstrong is one of a number of American artists who have spoken out about the overturning of Roe v. Asian chili-garlic sauce punches up pork burgers for July 4
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 For this year’s Fourth of July cookout, update long-held traditions with globally inspired flavors — starting with the burger. This recipe from our book “COOKish,” which limits recipes to just six ingredients without sacrificing flavor, is loosely based on a Filipino “chori” burger. It’s a spiced chorizo patty topped with a banana ketchup, mayo and a relish called atchara, or pickled green papaya. The sweet-savory toppings wonderfully balance the richness of the chili-spiced pork. Looking to pare the ingredients down to the essentials, we tried jarred Asian chili-garlic sauce and were delighted with the results. Most jars at the supermarket contain a bright mixture of chilies and garlic, of course, but also tangy rice vinegar, salt and sugar, making it several seasonings in one. Since pork burgers tend to dry out easily, we mixed the sauce directly into the ground pork … [Read more...] about Asian chili-garlic sauce punches up pork burgers for July 4
Ocean explorer discovers 5 sunken WWII subs, giving closure to hundreds of families
Since she was a young girl, Helen Cashell Baldwin had been haunted by the mystery of what happened to the doomed Navy submarine USS R-12. Baldwin's father, Fredrick Edward Cashell, and 41 other men died in June 1943 when the submarine sank off the Florida Keys during a World War II training exercise. The R-12 could not be found, and as Baldwin went from an 8-year-old girl to a 75-year-old woman, she all but lost hope that it would ever be discovered. "As a teenager, I found myself looking for him, because there was never a funeral," Baldwin said. "There was never a memorial service. ... There was nothing." But in 2011, a relative forwarded her a website claiming that the submarine had been found. Ocean explorer Tim Taylor, who set up the site, wanted to get in touch with relatives of the victims. Within months of speaking with Taylor, Baldwin and her two siblings boarded a boat and headed out into the Atlantic with Taylor and his wife and fellow explorer, Christine … [Read more...] about Ocean explorer discovers 5 sunken WWII subs, giving closure to hundreds of families

Omar Kelly: Where does Dolphins’ Tua Tagovailoa rank among NFL starting QBs?
The next generation of quarterbacks is coming. And some — like Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen — have already arrived, becoming the marquee players of today’s NFL. And there are quite a few who are blossoming before our eyes. Eight of the league’s top-12 quarterbacks now reside in the AFC, which should indicate how tough that conference will be this year. That means quarterbacks like Tua Tagovailoa need to step up, or get left behind. If Tagovailoa doesn’t move into the top third of NFL starting quarterbacks in the next season or two, the Miami Dolphins will have wasted their time on yet another average starting quarterback. Here’s a ranking of all 32 starting QBs in the league: NFL Elites — Put these quarterbacks on any team and they are likely advancing to the postseason. 1. Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes Mahomes, who turs 27 in September, is athletic, has a cannon for an arm, and has already proven he’s a winner (53-13 record) in his four seasons as an NFL … [Read more...] about Omar Kelly: Where does Dolphins’ Tua Tagovailoa rank among NFL starting QBs?
