The Chicago Police Department is making a push to hire newly separated U.S. Marines in a bid to overcome an officer shortage of over 1,000. "The reality is that we need to fill the gaps quickly," Chicago police Deputy Chief Migdalia Bulnes said, according to CBS. The department said they recently hired 50 new officers, but that number still leaves them about 1,300 short of what they need. That reality brought Bulnes and six other officers, all Marine veterans, to Camp Pendleton, Calif. to recruit Marines on their way out of the service into the Chicago Police Department. Filling the void will not be an easy task for the city's police, with other police departments around the country also facing a shortage of officers following a wave of resignations and … [Read more...] about Chicago Police look to recruit US Marines to combat officer shortage

Company buying Trump’s social media app faces subpoenas
NEW YORK (AP) — The company planning to buy Donald Trump’s new social media business disclosed Monday that it has received subpoenas from a grand jury in New York. Shares of Digital World Acquisition Corp. dropped 7% in morning trading Monday as the company reported that the subpoenas and related investigations by the Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission could delay its acquisition of the maker of Trump's Truth Social app. Trump’s social media venture launched in February as he seeks a new digital stage to rally his supporters and fight Big Tech limits on speech, a year after he was banned from Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. The Trump Media & Technology Group — which operates the app and was in the process of being acquired by “blank-check” firm Digital World — said in a statement that it will cooperate with "oversight that supports the SEC’s important mission of protecting retail investors.” Digital World said in a regulatory filing Monday … [Read more...] about Company buying Trump’s social media app faces subpoenas

The remains of a U.S. Navy destroyer that sank in a World War II battle against Japan have been found in what is believed to be the deepest wreck ever discovered. The wreck of the USS Samuel B. Roberts, also known as the Sammy B, was found in two pieces on a slope off the Philippines last week at a depth of more than 22,600 feet, according to a statement by the American explorer Victor Vescovo and the British company EYOS Expeditions. That's more than four miles deep. “It was an extraordinary honor to locate this incredibly famous ship, and by doing so, have the chance to retell her story of heroism and duty to those who may not know of the ship and her crew’s sacrifice,” said Vescovo, a former Navy commander and the founder of Caladan Oceanic, a marine-technology development company based in Dallas. Vescovo also identified what was previously the world’s deepest wreck, the USS Johnston, in the same area last year at a depth of more than 21,200 feet. Rudy Giuliani says the supermarket employee accused of slapping him should be prosecuted
Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani said he wants the supermarket employee accused of slapping him on the back as he campaigned for his son to be prosecuted, adding that if the suspect is released, it could encourage others to attack people with contrary political views. Giuliani detailed the Sunday attack at a Staten Island supermarket during a Monday morning news conference on his Facebook page. The adviser to former President Donald Trump said he stopped at the ShopRite to campaign for son, Andrew, who is vying for the Republican nomination for governor of New York, and was talking to people when he felt the smack on his back. Giuliani stumbled a step or two forward but did not fall, he said. The employee, Daniel Gill, 39, was charged with second-degree assault, according to the New York City Police Department. Giuliani believes Gill should be fired from his job and said, “Darn right, I think he should be prosecuted." “This guy should be imprisoned to say … [Read more...] about Rudy Giuliani says the supermarket employee accused of slapping him should be prosecuted
