LONDON (AP) – Regulators in the UK and four other countries have announced new rules to fast-track the development of modified COVID-19 vaccines to ensure drugmakers can move swiftly to target emerging variants of the disease. Previously authorized vaccines that are modified to combat new variants “will not need a brand new approval or `lengthy’ clinical studies,” Britain’s Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency said Thursday. “The clear goal is that future vaccine modifications that respond to the new variants of coronavirus can be made available in the shortest possible time to UK recipients without compromising at any stage on safety, quality or effectiveness,” Dr June Raine, the head of the agency, said in a briefing for reporters. The new guidance is based on the model already used to modify the seasonal flu vaccine to keep up with annual changes in the virus and was issued jointly by regulators in the UK, Australia, Canada, Singapore, and Switzerland. Suncor refinery north of Denver faces state review of outdated permits, plans $300 million push to be “better not bigger”
Colorado officials committed to cleaner air and reducing reliance on fossil fuels have reached a turning point on whether to tolerate the hulking oil refinery north of Denver that ranks among the state’s major polluters and regularly malfunctions . They must approve or deny Suncor Energy’s applications to renew its operating permits, which serve as contracts governing the emission levels of toxic pollutants that can cause cancer and serious heart, lung and other health problems. This is oversight power Colorado air pollution regulators have declined to use over nearly a decade of letting Suncor run the refinery under the equivalent of an expired driver’s license — a perk granted to companies if they submit timely renewal applications. Suncor’s outdated permits, which records show were issued in 2006 and 2012, allow emissions of 866,100 tons a year of heat-trapping gases and toxics including sulfur dioxide, benzene and hydrogen cyanide . During malfunctions, pollution … [Read more...] about Suncor refinery north of Denver faces state review of outdated permits, plans $300 million push to be “better not bigger”
Josh Hawley Tears Congress Apart For ‘Refusal’ To Address Immigration Crisis, Child Smuggling Rings
Missouri Republican Sen. Josh Hawley vehemently criticized lawmakers for failing to address one of the darkest results to emerge from the current immigration crisis: child smuggling rings. “It seems to me that the exploitation of children by cartels, human smugglers on the scale that you’re describing is absolutely unbelievable, and quite frankly, the refusal of this Congress to act to do something about this humanitarian crisis is absolutely unbelievable and absolutely indefensible,” Hawley said during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing Tuesday. The hearing featured testimony from Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Kevin McAleenan. The DHS chief broke down how the immigration crisis is escalating and how Congress must make take action in order for the country to manage the hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants reaching the U.S.-Mexico border. Thousands of migrants are appearing with a child, he said, knowing full well that current U.S. laws will allow them to be … [Read more...] about Josh Hawley Tears Congress Apart For ‘Refusal’ To Address Immigration Crisis, Child Smuggling Rings

The Biden era of climate-aware forest policy
One of the most egregious acts of the previous administration’s public lands agenda was the October decision to revoke protections for 9 million acres of Alaska’s Tongass National Forest, one of the world’s largest intact temperate rainforests. On his first day in office, President Joe Biden Joe Biden Trump State Department appointee arrested in connection with Capitol riot FireEye finds evidence Chinese hackers exploited Microsoft email app flaw since January Biden officials to travel to border amid influx of young migrants MORE signed an executive order that, among other things, identified the Trump administration’s elimination of the Tongass roadless rule as one of the actions that would be reviewed.
