POM Wonderful, the maker of the pomegranate beverage, is talking back to a Federal Trade Commission judge. Days after the FTC ruled that the company had made "false or misleading" claims about its product, the beverage maker launched an ad campaign incorporating the ruling -- by quoting the judge. In a 335-page opinion, Chief Administrative Law Judge Michael Chappell said: “Pomegranate juice is a natural fruit product with health promoting characteristics. The safety of pomegranate juice is not in doubt.” But he also found that there was “insufficient competent and reliable scientific evidence to support the implied claims” in POM advertisements, including that it can help fight heart disease, prostate cancer and erectile dysfunction. But that's the part that a company vice president, Corey Martin, is disputing. He said the company never made such direct claims. Lauren Maker Lauren Maker knew how to get politicians elected in Minneapolis, but she never hesitated to turn them out again if they disappointed her. After a lifetime in progressive politics, Maker died hours after suffering a brain aneurism on July 27 while attending a Minneapolis riverfront event as a member of the upper riverfront advisory committee. She was 59. A commemorative gathering of her friends is scheduled at 4 p.m. Friday at Boom Island Park, 800 NE. Sibley St. Maker entered politics young. As a student at Mounds View High School, she attended a rally in support of liberalizing the state’s abortion laws in the days before the Supreme Court’s Roe vs. Wade decision. It was also in high school that she developed a lifelong interest in choral music as a choir member and also was a cheerleader. While at the University of Minnesota, she found her way into the political ferment of a city switching in the 1970s from two-party rivalry into DFL hands. She became a … [Read more...] about Memorial set Friday for Lauren Maker, DFL activist
In a day when $150, mass produced, acrylic duck and goose calls are as much of a social symbal as they are a tool for harvesting waterfowl, it's refreshing to see one call maker representing our waterfowling roots. Made from exotic woods from all over the world, Mike Stelzner of C&S Custom Calls, builds every one of his duck and goose calls by hand. And they sound good! Real good! In fact, for the 3rd straight year Mike has been named the Grand National Champion Call Maker of the Year by the NWTF. Known as a turkey organization, the National Wild Turkey Federation has long sponsored the "hunting" and "decorative" divisions for duck and goose call makers. "The NWTF's Grand National Callmaking Competition is the premier call making competition in North America," said George Thornton, NWTF CEO. "This is the best place for up-and-coming callmakers to contend with seasoned veterans as they strive to outdo their creations from years past and win bragging … [Read more...] about Zumbrota Call Maker Wins National Title

ASV, the Grand Rapids, Minn., maker of compact track and skid steer loaders, may be returning to the ranks of Minnesota-based public companies. ASV LLC filed an initial registration with the Securities and Exchange Commission for an initial public offering that could raise $36 million. If it completes the offering, the 153-employee company will emerge from years of being a subsidiary of much-larger corporate owners. ASV Inc. was founded in 1983 in Marcell, Minn., and moved its headquarters to Grand Rapids in 1995. The company developed Posi-Track, an innovative rubber-tracked undercarriage system that reduced the ground force impact of traditional steel tracked loaders and wheeled skid steer loaders. ASV Inc. was a publicly traded company from 1984 until 2008, when it was acquired by Westport, Conn.-based Terex Corp. for $488 million. Terex Corp., a manufacturer of cranes and material handling equipment, had revenue of $8 billion when it purchased ASV. By 2016, its revenue had dropped … [Read more...] about ASV construction equipment maker could be going public again
