0 Real Estate Wheel House Pizzeria & Pub to be bicycle oriented. Jessica Miller , Patch Staff Posted | Updated Reply Wheel House Pizzeria & Pub will be the first business to open in the renovated bowling alley at First and State streets. Denny Elwell Co renovated the building into retail space about a year ago. One of the Wheel House co-owners, Dave Haworth said the restaurant should open sometime in May. Haworth and partner Chandler Evans named the pub after a wheel house on a ship, but the pub will not have a maritime theme. The name is metaphorical, Haworth said. There will be wheels about though. Haworth said the pub will be “very bicycle oriented” and will include custom bike racks for residents and people passing through Ankeny on the High Trestle Trail. The California Dream hasn’t stopped changing since the Gold Rush of 1849 attracted fortune hunters from around the world, but for generations the main selling points revolved around sun, surf, sky-filling mountains and a laid-back way of life. These days? Think taco trails, boba shops and a tacit admission that our tarnished Golden State now comes with difficulties that can’t be dispelled by clear blue skies — especially during fire season. Which doesn’t kill the dream, no matter what snarksters and cynics might claim. It just means taking stock in a more grounded sort of way. “It’s a more complex world we’re living in at this point,” said Ryan Becker, vice president of communications for Visit California. “But the California Dream ideal, as political and contested as things have gotten, is still alive.” I met Becker at a media open house last week hosted by his group, a nonprofit that divides the state into 12 “tourism regions” and touts each as the place to go.
