The Sears department store building at Southlake Mall is being auctioned online, but that doesn't mean the store itself will close. The struggling Hoffman Estates-based retailer, which has been closing stores across the country for years and sold off its iconic Craftsman line of tools last year, is selling 16 stores in a bid to raise capital, but is looking for lease-back deals through which it would collect a windfall from the sale and pay rent to a new owner instead of owning the building outright."We are pursuing a sale/leaseback of the Sears store," spokesman Howard Riefs said. "The store will then be leased by Sears (instead of owned) and remain open to the public."Cushman & Wakefield and RealINSIGHT Marketplace are auctioning off the 210,404-square-foot Sears, which was one of the original anchor stores when the Southlake Mall opened in 1974. It encompasses a 185,887-square-foot store and 24,517-square-foot auto center on a 17.5-acre site. The auction is slated … [Read more...] about Southlake Mall Sears building put up for sale

TASTE TEST: Phil's Caribbean Cuisine offers Jamaican flavors It may be cold out, but life's beachy at Phil's Caribbean Cuisine at 2330 Cline Ave. in Schererville. The new Jamaican restaurant has a brightly colored interior that includes photos of the Caribbean, a high-resolution picture of a tree-canopied beach splashed across the wall near the entrance and booths that resemble beach chairs. Reggae beats thrum in the background. The menu features many Jamaican favorites like bone-in whole red snapper, beef oxtail and, of course, jerk chicken. While the restaurant is known more for its award-winning barbecue, this special dish deserves some recognition, too.The bowl starts out with well-cooked cavatappi pasta covered in the scrumptious four-cheese sauce. Your role comes in with selecting two of the seven additional ingredients. This writer went with grilled chicken and crimini mushrooms, along with some complementary Cajun seasoning. The sauce is delicious and the seasoning gives it the desired kick. Pasta noodles also need not be lonely with the tender chicken and mushrooms to join it.
