Culture Movies & TV The third episode of American Horror Story: Apocalypse will center on Halloween night. “Tonight is all hallows eve,” Ms. Wilhemina Venable (Sarah Paulson) tells the group. “Everyone shall savor this night as if it were their last.” Michael Langdon (Cody Fern) recites two of the Ten Commandments. “Though shall not kill,” he says. “Though shall love thy neighbor.” He seems to have a different set of rules to follow then God’s commandments, however. At the beginning of episode 2, genetic prodigies Timothy Campbell (Kyle Allen) and Emily (Ashley Santos) are shocked when they discover a hoard of snakes in the closet. Kathy Bates’ Ms. Miriam Mead is delighted by the serpents and kills them for dinner. Just as the group gets ready to eat them for dinner, the snakes come alive and slither away. 3 However you feel about Jeremy Clarkson and his ex-Top Gear petrolhead chums, it’s hard to deny that The Grand Tour made a dazzling impression when it first arrived last year. The opening scene alone - a jaw-dropping, Mad Max-inspired desert chase - cost a reported £2.5 million, an eye-watering sum even for the car show’s deep-pocketed producers, Amazon. Returning for a second series, that lavish sequence has become a millstone round their necks. As producer Andy Wilman put it at the show’s premiere on Thursday, “How could we top that? But then, luckily, Richard Hammond crashed.” And so it is that Hammond’s well-publicised accident in a Croatian electric car provides the climax of this second series opener. They don’t include footage of the crash itself, but only because their camera crew missed it. Instead, we have wobbly video “grabbed off YouTube” of Swiss firemen extinguishing the smoking wreckage. … [Read more...] about The Grand Tour season 2, episode 1 review: Has Jeremy Clarkson finally found his groove?
Warning: spoilers follow The promise that The Walking Dead would return to its action-packed best has been only partly fulfilled so far this season. Gunfight has followed gunfight as the Survivors take their war of rebellion literally to evil Negan’s front door. But the battle scenes have been screamingly incoherent, with bonus helpings of unearned portentousness adding to the disappointment (e.g. Ezekiel and Carol staring into that slow motion dust storm last week for no apparent reason). So a big, hearty Negan grin for “Monsters” – the first episode of the latest run to hang together dramatically while packing in several bonus twists for good measure. Rick was genuinely speechless as Daryl gunned down the surrendered Saviour. A fight between Morgan and Jesus, for its part, had real edge. Walking Dead was unlikely to kill off one of its major second-tier characters so early into the new series – but for an instant it seemed the show might actually … [Read more...] about The Walking Dead, season 8, episode 3, Monsters recap: action, laughs and twists
Doing things by halves has never been the Walking Dead way. Last year the post-apocalyptic horror-thriller settled into an introspective groove early on and stuck to it rigorously (aside, of course, from a first episode that dabbled disastrously in torture porn). With season eight, by contrast, the show has come roaring out of the traps, like Daryl on his beloved motorbike. Clearly it intends to continue in this vein. On the back of an action-heavy premiere, instalment two expanded the rebellion against Negan, as the survivors trained their sights (literally) on the further-flung outposts of the Saviour empire. But the new emphasis on bullets 'n brawn is proving a mixed blessing, with the figurative and literal gun-smoke at the expense of storytelling clarity. Never-ending battle scenes were confusingly staged; characters are still monologuing as if coughing up selected excerpts from Shakespeare For Dummies. From too much standing around and talking to an excess of shooting and … [Read more...] about The Walking Dead, season 8, episode 2 recap: Rick meets a familiar face
