PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — A teenager, man, and police officer were injured in West Philadelphia as police apprehended two carjacking suspects on Sunday, authorities say. The incident happened at the intersection of 53rd and Thompson Streets around 2:15 p.m. Police say they spotted a white Volvo that was reportedly carjacked early Sunday morning. The boy was taken to CHOP and placed in critical but stable condition. After the crash, police say the two suspects fled the vehicle on foot. The Bail Project, a group that previously let out soon-to-be criminals, seeks to end cash bail in the Deep South as it expands its influence in the region. Organizers of The Bail Project’s “Bail Out the South” campaign told The Associated Press (AP) that the group seeks to pay the bail of thousands and will open offices in Alabama, Florida, Mississippi and South Carolina in 2021 — doubling the organization’s presence in the Deep South. Their ultimate goal is to put an end to the practice of cash bail by partnering with local organizations and advocacy groups, CEO Robin Steinberg told the AP. “When I think about our work around social justice and racial justice, you simply can’t talk about those issues without dealing with what’s happening in the South,” Steinberg said of the new undertaking. The Bail Project launched in 2018 in the wake of a 10-year effort in New York City spearheaded by Steinberg and The Bronx Freedom Fund, according to the group’s website. The legal age of smoking tobacco in Britain could reportedly be raised to 21 years old under the latest nanny state move from the country’s nominally Conservative government. In the hopes of transitioning the United Kingdom into a smoke-free nation by the end of the decade, a “radical” review commissioned by Health Secretary Sajid Javid could see the government recommend raising the legal age of smoking from 18 to 21. Though 18-year-olds are legally allowed to vote and indeed to serve in the nation’s armed forces, Javid, who quit smoking upon his appointment as Health Secretary last year, supports imposing new limits on tobacco, The Telegraph reports . Islington Council in London has in the past published claims that babies as young as three months old can show racial bias, demanding that extremely young children should be talked to about the issue of “race”. The post was recently uncovered by reporters at The Telegraph after the paper previously found that a number of councils across the United Kingdom had hired the services of a “Maoist” anti-whiteness organisation for the purpose of giving nursery staff racial awareness training.
