CALIFORNIA CITY (CBSLA) — A relative of two missing toddlers from Kern County spoke out this week about the ongoing search for 4-year-old Orrin and 3-year-old Orson West. (credit: CBS) The two young brothers disappeared from the backyard of their adoptive parents’ home in California City on Dec. 21. There have been multiple searches in Bakersfield , where the boys lived with their adoptive parents, before moving to California City in September. A West Virginia school has come under fire for instructing junior high students to write the Islamic profession of faith ostensibly to practice calligraphy. Rich Penkoski, a Christian parent and founder of online ministry Warriors for Christ, raised alarms over a packet on Islam his daughter’s seventh grade social studies teacher issued to students, according to Christian Post . The packet, edited from the full version of a world religions workbook , instructed students to practice writing the Shahada, or Islamic profession of faith, in Arabic calligraphy — an assignment that, if left undone, would result in detention, according to Penkoski’s daughter. Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves (R) on Thursday committed to signing a bill that bans transgender athletes from participating in girls’ or women’s sports at state schools and universities. His commitment to approve the bill comes after the state House this week passed the legislation, which is expected to make it to the governor’s desk in the upcoming days. The Mississippi Senate previously passed the bill last month, with both chambers voting mostly along party lines. “I will sign our bill to protect young girls from being forced to compete with biological males for athletic opportunities,” the governor said in a tweet. Alabama state senators approved a bill this week that would ban hormone therapy, puberty-blockers and surgery for transgender youth under age 19. The legislation, entitled the Vulnerable Child Compassion and Protection Act, passed the state Senate 23-4 on Tuesday, and will now go to the Alabama state House of Representatives for approval. If the legislation passes, violators would be subject to up to 10 years in prison or a fine of up to $15,000 , CBS News reported . ADVERTISEMENT Alabama state Sen. Shay Shelnutt (R) sponsored the bill, which would also require school staff to tell parents when "a minor's perception that his or her gender is inconsistent with his or her sex” – a move that would basically “out” transgender students. “Children aren’t mature enough to make these decisions on surgeries and drugs.
