COLUMN: Ainsworth has sold out its employees and the local economy
The recent sale of Ainsworth to the J.M. Smucker Co. has understandably generated a lot of concern. If you follow responses on social media, including the Tribune’s Facebook page, where the story broke, you’ll see all sorts of questions about jobs, plant closings, the fate of the company and what it all means to the region.Executives at Ainsworth say the sale is in the best interest of the “Ainsworth family,” but what does that mean? Surely it’s in the best interest of the Lang family — the owners of the company who, along with their private equity partner L Catterton (the largest consumer-brand equity firm in the world), stand to reap much of the $1.9 billion sale price. But what about the 700 employees who have no ownership stake? What can they possibly gain by becoming Smucker employees?The answer is job insecurity. OIL CITY — The Meadville softball team had just lost the lead to Oil City in the bottom of the sixth. The Lady Bulldogs then made sure they’d get a lead that would stick on the top of the seventh, plating seven runs on their way to a 19-14 victory over the Oilers during a non-region shootout on Wednesday. Miah Ewing tripled, Chili Bean doubled and Bella McEnroe and Taylor Coon both hit singles during that decisive seventh,. Bean was 4-for-5 with three runs scored and four RBIs in the game. McEnRoe was 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs. Coon finished 2-for-3 with two runs and three driven in. Ewing went 2-for-4 and drove in two. Eva Dillaman added a 2-for-4 line with two runs scored and three ribbies. Local ballet student to compete in New York
Adelya Gosmanova, 15, of Edmond, will join other dancers this week during the Youth America Grand Prix New York City Finals. Dancers were selected from 25 U.S. cities and eight international locations for one week of ballet and contemporary competitions. Adelya won her place in the finals with the scores she received at the Dallas Youth America Grand Prix Regional Competition held in February. She is the daughter of Dr. Albina Gosmanova and Dr. Niyaz Gosmanov, of Edmond. She has studied classical ballet for 10 years with Lisa Webb at Academy of Ballet and Theatre Arts in Edmond.
