Mueller Was Listening to
Sam and Laura Patten. Photo: Win McNamee This story is being published in partnership with Epic Magazine. I. Late one morning just after Easter 2018, Sam Patten’s Siberian husky, Pepper, began to go “berserk.” Patten, a 48-year-old Republican political operative, could hear a commotion from the basement of his Capitol Hill townhouse, where he was working in the cluttered office that he calls “my little dungeon.” Pepper is sweet and easily subdued by any affection, so when her barking continued — loud, urgent, insistent — it was enough to draw Patten back upstairs. By the time he made it to the living room, the FBI agents were already there, arguing with his wife. The intruders were no strangers to Laura Patten, who spent the last handful of years in a two-decade career in national security detailed to the agency. “When you’ve devoted the bulk of your adult life to protecting U.S. national security and interests, it is a very … [Read more...] about Mueller Was Listening to
Nootrobox Wants to Hack Your Brain — or At Least Make Adderall Obsolete
“Are you ready to watch us stab ourselves with technology?” asks Michael Brandt on a recent Tuesday evening at the WeWork office of Nootrobox, a San Francisco start-up that specializes in “cognitive enhancement.” Soon Brandt, the company’s COO, and its CEO, Geoffrey Woo, both 27, are settled at a conference table with two small boxes and some alcohol swabs. Inside each box is a FreeStyle Libre continuous glucose monitor, which consists of a little plastic patch connected to a little metal needle, with a chip inside that transmits information to a remote reader. Once the needle is inserted under the skin, it can stay in place for two weeks, meaning there’s no need to prick your finger every time you want data about the amount of sugar frolicking in your blood. “The user experience is getting better all the time with a lot of this stuff,” says Brandt, who should know, since he specializes in “human-interaction design.” … [Read more...] about Nootrobox Wants to Hack Your Brain — or At Least Make Adderall Obsolete
‘Adulting’ is hard. UC Berkeley has a class for that
Conner Wright is carrying a demanding course load in his final year as an English major at UC Berkeley: antebellum American literature, introduction to music therapy and a research seminar on William Shakespeare. The 20-year-old senior is immersed in the works of Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Herman Melville and Harriet Jacobs. But Wright, who is anticipating his graduation in May, has the self-awareness to know he needed a little something extra to prepare for his launch into a post-college world, that a superior ability to interpret classic literary works may not be enough. So he signed up for a class on “adulting,” where he is learning to create and stick to a personal budget, build a resume and apply for jobs and navigate romantic relationships in a time when online interactions are eclipsing face-to-face encounters. Advertisement “I need to learn how to get this adult thing down and manage life,” Wright said. The class, which has 30 students … [Read more...] about ‘Adulting’ is hard. Kyler Murray at 5-foot-10, 207 pounds at NFL combine
INDIANAPOLIS — Kyler Murray may not show off his arm or his legs at the NFL scouting combine, but on Thursday he assuaged colossal concerns about his size. The Heisman Trophy-winning dual-threat quarterback and speedy outfielder from the University of Oklahoma checked in at just over 5-feet-10 and 207 pounds with a hand size, as measured from his pinkie to his thumb, of 9½ inches. Although he’s the shortest quarterback measured at the combine since 2003, those numbers were welcome news for Murray, the executives and coaches gathered in Indianapolis and fans wondering how his size would affect his draft stock. “Quarterbacks come in all shapes and sizes,” New York Giants coach Pat Shurmur said. “Russell Wilson won a Super Bowl. I think you’ve got to look at the total player, you’ve got to look at his productivity and you’ve got to look at whether he fits.”Murray compares favorably to Wilson in 2012 and Baker Mayfield, last … [Read more...] about Kyler Murray at 5-foot-10, 207 pounds at NFL combine
