Senate GOP faces post-Trump spending brawl

Republicans are bracing for a fierce fight over spending as the party tries to figure out its post-Trump identity. GOP senators this week will wade into two major sources of division in the conference: whether to nix an earmark ban, one of the few remaining vestiges of the Tea Party years, and whether to adopt a caucus rule that endorses offsetting any increase in the debt ceiling with spending cuts. Coke, Procter & Gamble Announce Plans To Hike Prices As Deficit Spending Explodes Higher

Procter & Gamble on Tuesday became the latest major U.S. consumer products company to announce plans to hike prices of its goods in the face of rising commodities prices and transportation costs. The company—which makes some of the U.S.’s best-known household products, including Gillette razors, Tide detergent, and Crest toothpaste—said in its quarterly earnings announcement that it would hike prices on feminine care, baby care, and adult incontinence products beginning in September. The company said the prices increases would be in the mid to high single digits. Rival Kimberly-Clark, which makes Huggies diapers and Kleenix facial tissues, said last month that it would hike prices by a similar amount starting in June. Coca-Cola said on Monday that it was also planning to raise prices to offset rising commodities costs. “We are well-hedged in ’21, but there’s pressure built up for ’22, and so there will have to be some price increases,” CEO James Quincey said in an … [Read more...] about Coke, Procter & Gamble Announce Plans To Hike Prices As Deficit Spending Explodes Higher

Nolte: What Should’ve Won the Best Picture Oscar – 1950 to 1959

In part four of this series we look at the movies that should have won the Best Picture Oscar between 1950 and 1959. The cult of oh-so-sophisticated movie writers love to run down the 50’s, as a decade lost to Eisenhower-era conformity and cinematic bloat crafted by studios desperate to compete with TV. As you’ll see below, nothing could be further from the truth. The 1950s were an embarrassment of movie riches. Let’s begin… 1950 What Did Win: All About Eve What a year for movies. Sunset Boulevard, The Asphalt Jungle, Where the Sidewalk Ends, D.O.A., Broken Arrow, The Third Man, Panic in the Streets … Still, writer-director Joseph Mankiewicz’s timeless tale of ambition, deceit, and getting your just desserts refuses to age. A hoot of a classic filled with amazing dialogue, a Marilyn Monroe appearance, a Bette Davis performance for the ages, and an ending that still offends tight-assed feminists. What Should’ve Won: All About Eve In a perfect world, … [Read more...] about Nolte: What Should’ve Won the Best Picture Oscar – 1950 to 1959

Convicting Police of Murder Remains Rare in US

It took just three days after the April 11 killing of a young Black man by a white police officer in Minnesota for local prosecutors to announce charges in the case. Former Brooklyn Center police officer Kim Potter was charged on Wednesday with second-degree manslaughter in the shooting and killing of 20-year-old Daunte Wright during a traffic stop, Washington County Attorney Pete Orput announced. Potter's chief said Potter intended to use her Taser electroshock weapon but instead accidentally fired her gun. "We will vigorously prosecute this case and intend to prove that Officer Potter abrogated her responsibility to protect the public when she used her firearm rather than her Taser," Imran Ali, a prosecutor in Orput's office, said in a statement . While Wright's family is calling for murder charges against Potter, the alacrity with which Orput acted marks a shift from just a few years ago, when investigators would routinely spend months on a police shooting case only to … [Read more...] about Convicting Police of Murder Remains Rare in US
