The FBI raid on former President Donald Trump took place just days after historians met with President Joe Biden last week, reportedly warning him of a looming civil war. On August 4, several historians met with Biden at the White House warning him that America was facing divisions similar to that of the years before the Civil War before the 1860 election, according to The Washington Post. The group of historians included historian Jon Meacham, journalist Anne Applebaum, Princeton professor Sean Wilentz, University of Virginia historian Allida Black and presidential historian Michael Beschloss, according to the reports. New York is roaring back from the worst of the pandemic. Why isn’t San Francisco?
NEW YORK CITY — On a scorching summer evening, with humidity choking the city, thousands of sweaty visitors lined up to ascend almost 1,400 feet up in the air. Children squealed in delight as they disembarked on the 57th floor Summit observatory at the One Vanderbilt tower, as all of Manhattan unfolded in front of them through glass windows, from the delicate, silvery tip of the Chrysler Building to One World Trade Center catching the setting sun, a symbol of the city’s rebirth from a 2001 tragedy. San Francisco also knows how to attract people during these bizarre times — take Outside Lands , for instance — but there’s a difference between an annual extravaganza and, in Summit’s case, a typical Monday. Lethargic downtown San Francisco lacks the energy and sheer mass of daily locals and tourists that have reinvigorated Midtown Manhattan and beyond to provide a sense of how life in this metropolis used to be. There’s always been a disparity — New York has 10 times the … [Read more...] about New York is roaring back from the worst of the pandemic. Why isn’t San Francisco?
He’s a top-ranked basketball prodigy. But should an 8-year-old be ranked at all?
King Tari Johnson is a 4-foot-8, 91½-pound 8-year-old from Stockton whose mother packs his Looney Tunes lunchbox with ham, salami and cheese sandwiches she cuts into his favorite shapes: stars, footballs and, of course, basketballs. He’s also the future of the NBA. At least, that’s what a couple of websites that track this sort of thing want you to believe. King Tari, with his smooth ballhandling, advanced footwork and deep shooting range, is considered one of the nation’s best third-grade basketball players. If all goes as planned, he could be a household name in, oh, about a decade. As for the near term? King Tari just wants a growth spurt. Of all the potential pitfalls on his path to the NBA, genes might prove his undoing: His father stands 5-10, and his mom is 5-2. “I’m hoping he grows to be at least 6 feet,” said Tari Johnson, King Tari’s dad and personal trainer. “That would definitely help his chances of getting to the league.” King Tari, a giggly, soft-spoken boy who … [Read more...] about He’s a top-ranked basketball prodigy. Business Highlights: Inflation data, social media controls
___ Lower prices offer Americans slight reprieve from inflation WASHINGTON (AP) — Falling prices for gas, airline tickets and clothes gave Americans a little bit of relief last month, though overall inflation is still running at close to its highest level in four decades. Government data released Wednesday showed that consumer prices jumped 8.5% in July compared with a year earlier. That’s down from a 9.1% year-over-year increase in June. On a monthly basis, prices were unchanged from June to July, the first time that has happened after 25 months of increases. The reprieve offered no certainty that prices would stay on the decline. Inflation has sometimes slowed only to re-accelerate later. ___ Social media offers parents more controls. But do they help? Man initially given life without parole in 2 murders freed
BATON ROUGE, La. — A Louisiana man convicted of the 1979 killing of his roommate and another friend is being released after 42 years in prison, his life sentence without possibility of parole recently commuted by a state board. The Louisiana Board of Pardons and Parole voted 2-1 on Monday to release David Chenevert, who had agreed to the life sentence when he pleaded guilty in 1981 to stabbing Michael Brown and Evelyn McIntyre. The board’s decision came after a nearly 90-minute hearing, during which the victims’ relatives testified. Almost all of them spoke against releasing him. Chenevert, 64, said he and his wife, whom he married while incarcerated in 2001, plan to settle far away from his hometown of Baton Rouge. The son of a Baton Rouge police lieutenant, Chenevert cried as board member Sheryl Ranatza cast the deciding vote, with Pearl Wise voting in favor of his release and Bonnie Jackson opposing it, The Advocate reported. Chenevert agreed to restrictions that … [Read more...] about Man initially given life without parole in 2 murders freed

Washburn Fire update: Blaze grows and containment drops
Update: Washburn Fire ‘very unlikely’ to damage Yosemite’s giant sequoias despite growing blaze The wildfire burning across the southwest corner of Yosemite National Park grew Tuesday to 3,516 acres, officials said. The Washburn Fire has been burning for nearly a week as almost 550 firefighters fight to protect the historic Mariposa Grove, home to more than 500 giant sequoias in the park. Crews said Tuesday they were reporting success in preventing the flames from reaching the famed trees. But containment of the blaze dropped from 22% to 17% by Tuesday evening as the fire grew. Lee Byer, a spokesperson for the National Park Service, described the firefight as “slow, steady and intense,” adding that, “due to the significant heavy fuels, such as large dead trees, (the fire) is creating a lot of heat and smoke.” The cause of the fire was still under investigation, but because there was no lightning in the area, officials have said the fire is likely to have been … [Read more...] about Washburn Fire update: Blaze grows and containment drops
